Why the Stockholm Marathon Is on Every Serious Runner’s Bucket List
Most marathons finish on a road, a bridge, or outside an arena. Stockholm finishes inside one. The 1912 Olympic Stadium — built for the Stockholm Summer Olympics — is the only finish line in marathon running where you enter a historic Olympic venue, run a lap of the track, and cross the line on the same ground where athletes have set 83 officially recognised world records. No other athletics arena in the world comes close to that number.
That finish alone makes Stockholm worth the trip. The 42 km that come before it are not bad either.

The Course: Seven Districts, Two Waterfronts, One Medieval Old Town
The race starts outside the stadium on Lidingövägen and immediately takes runners through Östermalm — Stockholm’s most exclusive neighbourhood — before winding through Vasastan, along the waterfront at Kungsholmen, and past the City Hall. From there the course moves through Gamla Stan, Stockholm’s medieval Old Town with buildings dating to the 13th century, and the Royal Palace, before crossing into Djurgården and the bohemian streets of Södermalm.
It is a city tour as much as a race. Stockholm is built across 14 islands, and the course reflects that — water, parks, cobblestones, and open boulevards all within the same 42 km.
The Race Weekend
The marathon sits at the centre of a full weekend of events. The adidas Shake Out Run on Friday, May 29 gives registered runners a relaxed pre-race morning on the course. The Stockholm Mini Marathon follows on Sunday, May 31 for those who want the atmosphere without the full distance.
A pasta party, running expo, massage at the finish, hot showers, and shuttle buses back to the city for any runner who drops out round out the logistics — the kind of runner-first organisation that keeps Stockholm’s international reputation strong.
This comes weeks after the historic sub-2 hour world record at London 2026
Course Records and Championship Status
The men’s course record stands at 2:10:10, set by Nigussie Sahlesilassie in 2019. The women’s record is 2:28:24, set by Norwegian legend Grete Waitz in 1988. The 2026 edition also hosts the Swedish Marathon Championship, making the elite start highly competitive.
Pacers are available for every target from 3:00 to 5:45, and the average finish time across the field sits around 2:58 — a reflection of how accessible the event is while still drawing strong club runners.
Can Indian Runners Participate?
Registration for the 2026 edition is now closed. But Stockholm opens registration for the following year shortly after race day — if a European marathon finish inside a 1912 Olympic Stadium is on your list, bookmarking the 2027 edition is worth doing now. Entry fees are in the €80–100 range, and the race fills fast with international runners.
