Vizag Navy Marathon 2026: Dates, Registration & Complete Runner’s Guide

My father served in the Indian Navy. So when I say the Vizag Navy Marathon is special, it comes from a place that goes beyond running. I spent five years in Visakhapatnam studying at GITAM University — walking RK Beach on weekends, watching Navy warships on the horizon, eating fish curry at the harbour-side stalls. Back then, the idea of 14,000 runners flooding that same coastline at sunrise would have seemed impossible. Marathon culture simply didn’t exist in Vizag in those years.

Today it does — and the Vizag Navy Marathon is the reason why. Founded in 2014 by the Eastern Naval Command of the Indian Navy, this race didn’t just put Visakhapatnam on the running map. It created the running map. In a city that had never seen a mass participation running event, the Navy showed up and built one from scratch. Over a decade later, the 2026 edition on December 14 will see its 11th running — with 14,000+ participants, AIMS certification, and a coastal route that runners across India travel specifically to experience.

If you’re planning to run the Vizag Navy Marathon 2026, this is everything you need to know.

About the Vizag Navy Marathon

The Vizag Navy Marathon is an Eastern Naval Command initiative — India’s Navy running its own city marathon as a flagship sporting event and Navy Day celebration. It began in 2014 as the first organised mass running event in Visakhapatnam, at a time when the city had no running culture to speak of. The Navy didn’t just launch a race — it launched a movement.

A decade on, the numbers tell the story. From a few hundred runners in its early editions, VNM grew to 14,000 participants in 2024, drawn from across India and internationally — armed forces personnel, corporate runners, students, seasoned marathoners, and first-timers all sharing the same starting line on RK Beach at sunrise.

The race earned AIMS certification in 2018, making it a globally recognised event and a Boston Marathon qualifier — a significant milestone for a race that was only a few years old at the time. Today it holds the distinction of being Andhra Pradesh’s biggest sporting event and one of the most scenic road races anywhere in the country.

🪖 An Indian Navy Initiative

The Vizag Navy Marathon is hosted by the Eastern Naval Command — one of the three commands of the Indian Navy headquartered in Visakhapatnam. Running alongside naval personnel, with warships visible on the horizon and the Kursura Submarine Museum on your course, there is no marathon in India quite like this one.

Race Categories — Navy-Themed Distances

What makes the Vizag Navy Marathon immediately distinctive is how it names its race categories. Each distance is themed around a class of Indian Navy vessel — a small but meaningful touch that gives the race its own identity and reminds every runner exactly who is hosting them.

Race NameDistanceNamed AfterTiming Chip
⚓ Carrier Run42K Full MarathonIndian Navy Aircraft Carriers✅ Yes
🤿 Submarine Run21K Half MarathonIndian Navy Submarines✅ Yes
✈️ Aircraft Run10KNaval Aviation✅ Yes
🚢 Frigate Run5K Fun RunIndian Navy Frigates❌ No

The Submarine Run (21K) is the most popular category and passes directly alongside the Kursura Submarine Museum — a decommissioned INS Kursura submarine permanently docked on the beach as a museum. Running past it mid-race is one of those moments that stops you in your tracks regardless of how tired you are.

The Carrier Run (42K) is for competitive runners and BQ seekers. With AIMS certification and a fast coastal course, your finish time is officially recognised worldwide. Prize money is awarded across open and age categories.

Course Route — The Coastline That Runners Travel For

The Vizag Navy Marathon course is the single biggest reason runners from outside Andhra Pradesh make the trip. It starts and finishes at RK Beach — Vizag’s most iconic stretch of coastline — and runs along the shoreline in both directions, giving runners an almost uninterrupted view of the Bay of Bengal on one side and the Eastern Ghats on the other.

This is not a city race with traffic diversions and concrete jungles. The 22 km stretch of beach road that forms the spine of this course is genuinely unique — there is no equivalent stretch of coastal running road in India. The organisers themselves call it “the best scenic route in the world” and while that’s a bold claim, anyone who has run it at sunrise in December will tell you it is not far off.

I walked that stretch of beach road countless times during my five years in Vizag. The sea breeze off the Bay of Bengal in early morning is unlike anything else. Add 14,000 runners, naval warships on the horizon, and the first light of sunrise — it must be something else entirely now.

🏃 Course Highlights

  • Start and finish at RK Beach — Vizag’s iconic seafront
  • Bay of Bengal on one side, Eastern Ghats on the other throughout
  • 22 km of uninterrupted coastal road — no equivalent in India
  • Kursura Submarine Museum visible mid-course (21K runners pass directly alongside)
  • Vizag Aircraft Museum en route for 10K runners
  • Nearly flat for 5K, gentle rolling hills for longer distances
  • Sunrise over the Bay of Bengal during race — a course landmark in itself
  • Traffic-free, fully managed by Indian Navy and local authorities
  • Hydration stations with water and energy drinks throughout
  • 2,500+ volunteers on course (2025 edition)

How to Reach Visakhapatnam for the Navy Marathon

Vizag is one of India’s better-connected Tier 2 cities — accessible by air, train, and road from most major cities. December is also not peak tourist season here the way it is in Goa, which means flights and hotels are more reasonably priced.

By Air

Fly into Visakhapatnam Airport (VTZ), which has direct connections from Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Chennai, Delhi, and Kolkata. The airport is approximately 15–18 km from RK Beach. Book flights early — the marathon draws runners from across India and nearby departure cities fill up quickly around race weekend.

By Train

Visakhapatnam Railway Station is one of the best-connected stations on the East Coast. Multiple trains connect it directly to Hyderabad (12–14 hours), Kolkata (12 hours), Chennai (10–12 hours), and Bhubaneswar (5–6 hours). The station is about 7 km from RK Beach. Train is often the most comfortable and affordable option if you’re coming from Hyderabad or the southern metros.

By Road

Vizag is accessible via NH16 (the East Coast Highway). From Hyderabad it’s approximately 700 km (10–11 hours). A good option if you’re in a group or driving from nearby Andhra Pradesh cities. Parking is available near the race venue.

✅ Arrive by Friday 11 December: This gives you a full day to settle in, attend the bib expo on Saturday, rest, and be race-ready on Sunday morning. Rushing in on Saturday is not ideal — particularly if you’re travelling a long distance.

Where to Stay for the Vizag Navy Marathon

The start line is at RK Beach, which is also the heart of Vizag’s hotel and hospitality strip. Staying within the Beach Road area puts you within walking distance of the start — ideal for an early race morning when the last thing you want is a long commute.

Best Area — Beach Road & RK Beach

This is the obvious choice. Hotels along Beach Road put you at the start line in minutes. Options range from budget to upscale — The Park Visakhapatnam is the premium choice right on the beach, while Fortune Murali Park and Hotel Daspalla offer solid mid-range comfort close to the action. Book early — these fill up fast around race weekend.

Waltair & City Centre

Waltair, just inland from RK Beach, has a good mix of business hotels and guesthouses at more affordable rates. A short auto or cab ride to the start. Good option if Beach Road hotels are full or over budget.

💡 Local Insider Tip

Vizag’s hotel pricing is significantly more reasonable than Goa or Mumbai race weekends. But Beach Road properties still fill up — especially for a December race that attracts 14,000 runners plus families. Book your accommodation as soon as you confirm registration, ideally 2–3 months ahead. December is also mild and pleasant in Vizag — a popular weekend getaway for the Hyderabad crowd — so the city gets busy.

December Weather in Vizag for Runners

December in Visakhapatnam is genuinely good running weather. The North-East monsoon that affects Chennai and parts of coastal Andhra wraps up by mid-November, leaving December clear, dry, and cooler than the rest of the year. The sea breeze off the Bay of Bengal keeps early mornings comfortable even when afternoon temperatures climb.

ConditionDecember RangeRunner’s Take
Temperature22–30°CEarly start keeps you in the lower range — manageable for the full distance
Sea BreezeConsistentCoastal course means natural cooling throughout — a real advantage
HumidityModerateHigher than Delhi or Pune in December but the sea breeze compensates
Rain RiskVery LowPost-monsoon, December is typically dry in Vizag

For full marathon runners: hydration is important even in December coastal conditions. The humidity and rising sun in the later stages (after 8 AM) can take more out of you than expected. Stick to your hydration plan regardless of how comfortable the early kilometres feel.
