What Is the Federal Bank Kochi Marathon?

The Federal Bank Kochi Marathon is an annual AIMS-certified road race held in Kochi, Kerala, organised by CleoSportz and title-sponsored by Federal Bank. It runs through the backwaters of God’s Own Country, offering four race categories from a 3 km Green Run to the full 42.195 km marathon.

Now in its fourth year, the Kochi Marathon has quickly established itself as Kerala’s flagship running event and one of the most visually stunning courses in India. The tagline #GodsOwnMarathon isn’t hyperbole — the route genuinely takes you past the shimmering backwaters that put Kerala on every runner’s bucket list.

The event is built around three pillars: eco-consciousness (the 3K Green Run reflects a sustainability mission), sports tourism (Kerala Tourism is an official partner), and inclusivity — there’s a Special Run for differently-abled participants alongside the elite field. All timing is on net time, not gun time.

What Does the Kochi Marathon Route Look Like?

The Kochi Marathon route is as close to a scenic dream as Indian road running gets. Starting and finishing at Maharaja’s College Stadium, Ernakulam, the course traces a path along the backwaters that define God’s Own Country — flat, well-paved roads with water views throughout.

Route Snapshot · AIMS Certified Course
“Running beside Kerala’s backwaters as dawn breaks is an experience most Indian marathons simply can’t offer.”

The course is flat and fast — a genuine PB course for intermediate runners. The backwater stretches create natural cooling corridors, which matters in February when Kochi’s humidity is already climbing. Expect enthusiastic Malayali crowd support and one of India’s most photogenic finish-line selfies.

What Gear Do You Need for the Kochi Marathon in February?

February in Kochi means warm, humid conditions — early mornings start around 22–24°C with humidity at 70–80%. Your gear choices matter more here than at drier Indian marathons like Delhi or Ahmedabad. Prioritise breathability over everything.

Running Shoes for Humidity
Mesh uppers, high breathability, good drainage. Stability shoes suit Kochi’s flat paved course well. Avoid heavy cushioning if you’re chasing a PB.
Best Running Shoes India →
GPS Running Watch
Essential for pacing in humidity. Net time scoring means your splits matter — don’t go out too fast on the flat sections. Heart rate tracking helps manage effort.
Best GPS Watches India →
Moisture-Wicking Apparel
No cotton. Lightweight polyester or technical fabrics only. Anti-chafe shorts or tights are strongly recommended for the half and full distances.

Anti-Chafe & Sun Protection
Apply BodyGlide or Vaseline before the race. The sun rises mid-race for full marathon runners — a cap and SPF are non-negotiable past the 3-hour mark.

Where to Stay and How to Get to Kochi for the Marathon

Kochi is superbly connected. Most runners fly into Cochin International Airport (COK), about 30 km from the city. Kochi Metro (KMRL) — the official travel partner — makes getting to the start easy from most of the city.

🏨 Where to Stay

Official hospitality partner is Crowne Plaza Kochi. Budget options near Marine Drive and MG Road in Ernakulam keep you close to the start. Book 60+ days out — hotel rates spike sharply around race weekend with 8,000+ runners in town.

✈️ Getting Here

Cochin International Airport (COK) has direct flights from Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai and Hyderabad. Kochi Metro connects the airport to the city. Book train tickets 60+ days in advance on IRCTC — race weekend trains fill up fast.

🌡️ February Weather

Temperature 22–30°C, humidity 70–80%. Pre-dawn starts (4 AM for the full marathon) help, but heat builds for slower finishers. If you’re travelling from North India — especially Delhi’s dry winter — acclimatise for 1–2 days before race day.

🍽️ Carb-Loading in Kerala

Kerala cuisine is a runner’s dream for carb-loading — appam, puttu and rice dishes are everywhere and gut-friendly. Go easy on coconut-heavy curries the night before. Stick to your tested pre-race meal; don’t experiment in Kochi.
