The Grand Pivot: Why Kipchoge Launched “Eliud’s Running World”

For over a decade, Eliud Kipchoge defined the outer limit of human performance. From breaking the two-hour barrier in Vienna during the INEOS 1:59 Challenge to capturing back-to-back Olympic gold medals in Rio and Tokyo, his career was built on precision, speed and historic achievements. However, following his performance at the 2025 New York City Marathon, Kipchoge acknowledged that his vision for running had expanded.

Rather than chasing narrow margins at major urban races, he set out to build an inclusive global running movement. The 7-continent challenge allows Kipchoge to run alongside amateur athletes, experience diverse marathon cultures and direct international funding toward critical social causes in host regions.

Key Mission Drivers for the World Tour
  • Global Accessibility: Bringing world-class distance running directly to emerging marathon hubs across South America, Africa and Oceania.
  • Environmental Action: Partnering with local organizations at each race stop to plant indigenous trees and promote ecological preservation.
  • Education Initiatives: Funding community libraries, digital learning centers and school infrastructure through the Eliud Kipchoge Foundation.

Race Recaps & Upcoming Tour Stops

Stop 1: Sanlam Cape Town Marathon, South Africa (May 24, 2026)

Kipchoge chose the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon for his inaugural tour stop, marking the very first time he competed in an official marathon on the African continent. Starting near Table Mountain, over 27,000 runners lined up alongside Kipchoge in a race that also served to bolster Cape Town’s candidacy to join the Abbott World Marathon Majors.

Kipchoge ran a composed, community-focused race, finishing in 2:13:29 to massive applause from thousands of spectators lining the streets. The event set an inspiring tone for the tour, emphasizing togetherness and African running excellence.

Stop 2: NB42k Porto Alegre Marathon, Brazil (July 12, 2026)

For his South American leg, Kipchoge returned to Brazil for the NB42k Porto Alegre Marathon. Brazil holds significant sentimental value for Kipchoge, as Rio de Janeiro was the site of his first Olympic marathon gold medal in 2016.

The fast, coastal Porto Alegre course delivered optimal weather conditions and energetic crowd support. Kipchoge completed the race comfortably, engaging with local youth development projects in the city throughout race weekend.

Stop 3: Melbourne Marathon, Australia (October 11, 2026)

Oceania formed the third chapter of the tour as Kipchoge headed to Australia for the 2026 Nike Melbourne Marathon on October 11. He delivered a vintage performance to win the race in a course record time of 2:09:10. Shaving exactly two seconds off the previous record, this victory marks his 17th career marathon win and his first competitive victory since 2023.

Displaying extreme tactical patience, Kipchoge ran shoulder to shoulder with Australian Jimmy Whelan until the 30-kilometre mark. At that point he surged and completely dominated the final 12 kilometres before finishing to a massive crowd inside the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). Australia’s Thomas Do Canto claimed second place with a time of 2:10:35.

After the race Kipchoge noted that his body is still peaking. “I believe that my body is still peaking, still able to compete with the next generation. The oldest athlete is still competing but I am happy to run with the gen Zs,” he said. Read our complete race breakdown of Kipchoge’s historic Melbourne victory for full splits and pacing data.
