The 2026 running season in India is shaping up to be one of the busiest yet. Peak season runs from January to March and again in October to December, offering the best weather conditions in most parts of the country.

The best time to run a marathon in India is October to February, when temperatures are cooler across most of the country. The peak season is November to January, with major races like the Tata Mumbai Marathon, Freshworks Chennai Marathon and Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon all held during this window. For mountain and trail runs, July to September is ideal in Ladakh and the Himalayas.
The Tata Mumbai Marathon is the biggest marathon in India and the largest in Asia by participation, with over 46,000 runners across six race categories. It holds an IAAF Gold Label status and a prize pool of USD 405,000. The NMDC Hyderabad Marathon is India’s second largest, with 30,000+ participants.
Three Indian road races hold World Athletics Gold Label status — the highest certification in road running. These are the Tata Mumbai Marathon, the Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon, and the TCS World 10K Bengaluru. All three are organised by Procam International and attract elite international athletes every year.
Yes. While most major road marathons avoid the monsoon months of June to August, there are events that run during this period. The NMDC Hyderabad Marathon and Mumbai Half Marathon are held in late August. High-altitude events like the Ladakh Marathon and Spiti Marathon are specifically timed for July to September, above the monsoon cloud line.
Registration for the Tata Mumbai Marathon opens online at tatamumbaimarathon.procam.in, typically around July each year. The 2027 edition is scheduled for January 17, 2027. Entry fees vary by category — the full marathon requires a qualifying timing certificate. Popular categories sell out within days of registration opening, so set a reminder and register early.
The Ladakh Marathon, held annually in September in Leh, is the world’s highest marathon at approximately 3,500 metres above sea level. It is AIMS certified and offers distances of 72K ultra, 42K full and 21K half marathon. The Spiti Marathon in Kaza, Himachal Pradesh runs at an even higher altitude of around 3,800 metres.

Maharashtra has the highest concentration of running events in India, with races in Mumbai, Pune, Nashik, Nagpur, Lonavala, Vasai and Aurangabad throughout the year. Karnataka is second, with Bengaluru alone hosting the Bengaluru Marathon, Bengaluru Midnight Marathon and TCS World 10K.
