🏆 Status: Abbott World Marathon Major (8th) · World Athletics Gold Label · Africa’s first and only Major
🦁 Why it matters: ~80% of the world’s top 50 marathon runners come from Africa. Until now, none of them had a Major on home soil.

There is a stat that every runner heading to Cape Town should understand before they arrive: approximately 80% of the world’s top 50 marathon runners come from Africa. The continent has produced the greatest marathon runners in history. And until June 10, 2026, none of them had ever had an Abbott World Marathon Major on home soil.
The Sanlam Cape Town Marathon changes that permanently. Confirmed as the eighth Abbott World Marathon Major on June 10, 2026, Cape Town becomes Africa’s first — and only — World Major when it formally enters the series on May 23, 2027. The 2026 edition produced a 2:04:55 course record, the fastest marathon ever run on African soil. Eliud Kipchoge chose Cape Town for his first marathon on the African continent. The course runs in the shadow of Table Mountain — a UNESCO New Seven Wonders of Nature — with Atlantic Ocean views on the Sea Point promenade and a finish in Green Point Park that frames one of the great marathon backdrops in the world.
For Indian runners, Cape Town sits differently from the other Majors. It is the longest flight by journey time. The visa process is unfamiliar but manageable. And the South African Rand makes Cape Town one of the most affordable destinations in the entire Six or Eight Star journey — significantly cheaper on the ground than Berlin, London, New York or Tokyo. This guide covers every entry route now available, the full course, the South Africa visa process for Indian passport holders, and what the trip will realistically cost.

How to Get a Cape Town Marathon Bib: All Entry Paths Explained
The 2027 ballot closed on June 24, 2026. Results went out on June 26. If you missed it or were unsuccessful, the two guaranteed routes — ITO packages and charity entry — opened on June 26, 2026 on a first-come, first-served basis. For the inaugural Major edition, demand is higher than any previous Cape Town race. Move quickly.
The 2027 Ballot Is Closed — What Now?
The general ballot ran June 10–24, 2026 via the official Howler entry platform. All applicants paid a non-refundable R5 application fee donated to a race charity. Results were announced June 26, 2026. If you did not apply or were unsuccessful, the ITO and charity routes are your path in — and both opened the same day as ballot results.
Path 1: Official Tour Operator (ITO) — Guaranteed Bib (OPEN NOW)
Marathon Tours & Travel is the Official Tour Operator of the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon and holds guaranteed race entries bundled into travel packages including accommodation, transfers, expo assistance, and race weekend support. ITO entries opened June 26, 2026, first-come, first-served. Other authorised operators include Sports Tours International (UK-based) and Adventure Time Travel (Australia-based).
For Indian runners — managing flights, accommodation, and race entry independently from Delhi or Mumbai to Cape Town is more complex than other Majors. The ITO route eliminates that complexity in a single booking.
Path 2: Charity Entry — Guaranteed Bib (OPEN NOW)
Charity entries also opened June 26, 2026. Runners commit to a fundraising minimum in exchange for a confirmed race entry. Partner charities and minimum amounts are listed at capetownmarathon.com. This is the lower-cost guaranteed route compared to an ITO package — you pay the entry fee and raise a minimum fundraising amount, but manage your own flights and accommodation.
Path 3: Candidacy Club (Closed for 2027)
The Candidacy Club was a loyalty programme for runners who committed to Cape Town during its evaluation years. Club members received priority allocation ahead of the general ballot and had until June 18, 2026 to select their preferred year. This route is now closed for 2027. Register interest for future editions at capetownmarathon.com as the race’s entry system matures.
Path 4: 2028 General Ballot (Next Cycle)
If you are targeting Cape Town 2028, the next general ballot is expected to open approximately June 2027. Start planning now — enter your email at capetownmarathon.com to be notified when registration opens. As the race grows in profile as an established Major, ballot demand will increase year on year.

Cape Town Marathon Course: Table Mountain to the Atlantic and Back
The Cape Town Marathon starts and finishes at DHL Stadium in Green Point, looping through the city in the shadow of Table Mountain. The organisers describe it as flat — and compared to New York’s bridges or Boston’s Newton Hills, it largely is. There is one exception: a sustained climb near the University of Cape Town at around km 25 that every runner will feel. Get that one hill right and the final 17 km — including the flat Sea Point promenade along the Atlantic — are among the most spectacular closing sections of any Major in the world.
Km 0–5 — Green Point and the Atlantic Seaboard
The race starts in the DHL Stadium precinct — the same venue that hosted 2010 FIFA World Cup matches. Two start points (Stadium start and Beach Road at Mouille Point) funnel into a single course within the opening kilometres. The early section runs along the Atlantic seaboard through Green Point and Mouille Point with Signal Hill rising to the east. The atmosphere at the inaugural Major start will be the most charged in Cape Town running history. Start conservatively — the cool air and crowd will pull you faster than planned.
Km 5–12 — V&A Waterfront and the City Foreshore
The course moves through the V&A Waterfront — Cape Town’s harbour-front entertainment and dining district with direct views across Table Bay. The city skyline is on one side; Table Mountain fills the other. This is one of the most photographed sections of any marathon course in the world. The route then moves into the city’s foreshore along Buitenkant Street toward the City Bowl.
At approximately km 10, the course passes the Castle of Good Hope — one of South Africa’s oldest surviving colonial buildings, built by the Dutch East India Company between 1666 and 1679. Directly nearby stands City Hall, where Nelson Mandela delivered his first public speech as a free man on February 11, 1990. The Madiba Statue stands outside. You run past two of the most historically weighted landmarks in South Africa within the space of 2 km.
Km 12–20 — Woodstock, Salt River and Observatory
From the City Bowl the course enters Woodstock — Cape Town’s most creative neighbourhood, known for large-scale murals, street art, converted industrial spaces, and vocal local support. Salt River follows, then Observatory — a student-heavy area built around the South African Astronomical Observatory, which has operated here since 1820. The atmosphere shifts from urban to residential. Crowd support through Woodstock is among the loudest on the course.
Km 20–27 — Mowbray, Rondebosch, and the UCT Climb
The course moves through Mowbray and Rondebosch — leafy, established suburbs at the foot of the Devil’s Peak spur of Table Mountain. The University of Cape Town sits on the slopes above Rondebosch, and it is here, at approximately km 25, that the course delivers its one significant test: a sustained climb that breaks the otherwise flat profile.
This is the pivotal moment of the Cape Town Marathon. Runners who have gone out too hard in the first 25 km will feel the climb take far more than it should. Runners who have been patient will crest it and run the final 15 km with something still in reserve. Do not panic on the climb — it is sustained but not steep. It is manageable with steady, controlled effort.
Km 27–37 — The Return Through the Southern Suburbs
After the UCT climb the course begins working north through the southern suburbs, gradually descending toward sea level. Table Mountain — visible throughout the race — now fills the frame ahead of you as you run toward it. This is a quieter section in terms of crowd density, but the mountain changes character depending on light and cloud. In May it is often draped in the “tablecloth” of cloud that spills over the flat summit plateau — one of Cape Town’s most photographed natural spectacles.
Km 37–42.2 — Sea Point Promenade and the Green Point Finish
The final 5 km run along the Sea Point promenade — one of the most remarkable stretches on any marathon course in the world. The Atlantic Ocean is to your left. The Twelve Apostles mountain range rises to your right. The promenade is wide, flat, and built exactly for moments like this. Crowd support from Cape Town’s densest running community lines this stretch. The final kilometre turns back into Green Point. The finish on Vlei Road in Green Point Park sits in front of Table Mountain. There is no finish line backdrop in World Marathon Majors running quite like it.

For Indian Runners: South Africa Visa, Flights and Budget
South Africa Visa for Indian Nationals
Indian passport holders require a South Africa visa to enter the country. Applications are handled through VFS Global centres in India on behalf of the South African High Commission. Centres operate in Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Pune, and Chandigarh. Allow 4–6 weeks minimum — apply as soon as your race entry is confirmed.
Key documents required: Valid passport (minimum 6 months validity, 2 blank pages), completed visa application form, two passport photos, return flight booking, hotel confirmation, bank statements (last 3–6 months), proof of employment or business registration, travel insurance, yellow fever vaccination certificate (required if your connection transits through a yellow fever endemic country — check your specific routing), and your Cape Town Marathon race entry confirmation.

| Total visa cost (approximate) | ₹6,000 – ₹10,000 |
Flights from India to Cape Town
There are no direct flights from India to Cape Town International Airport (CPT). All routes connect via Africa or the Middle East, adding 14–18 hours total journey time. Ethiopian Airlines via Addis Ababa is generally the most efficient routing from both Delhi and Mumbai.
| From | Best Route | Airlines | Total Journey |
|---|---|---|---|
| Delhi (DEL) | Via Addis Ababa | Ethiopian Airlines | 14–16 hours |
| Mumbai (BOM) | Via Addis Ababa | Ethiopian Airlines | 14–16 hours |
| Delhi (DEL) | Via Dubai + Johannesburg | Emirates / Flydubai | 16–19 hours |
| Mumbai (BOM) | Via Nairobi | Kenya Airways | 15–17 hours |
| Bengaluru (BLR) | Via Dubai or Addis | Various | 16–19 hours |
Arrive by Wednesday May 19. The Expo runs Thursday through Saturday. Bib pickup is mandatory at the Expo — no race-day collection. Arriving mid-week gives you a buffer after a long-haul journey, time to adjust to SAST (3.5 hours behind IST), and unhurried Expo access.
Race Weekend Schedule (May 2027)
| Day | What to Do |
|---|---|
| Wed May 19 | Arrive Cape Town. Check in. Recover from long-haul. Easy 20-min walk along the V&A Waterfront. Sleep early — your body clock is 3.5 hours ahead of local time. |
| Thu May 20 | Expo opens. Pick up your bib and race pack on Thursday — avoid Saturday queues. Check your race bib assignment (Stadium start or Beach Road start). Walk the finish area at Green Point Park. |
| Fri May 21 | Rest day. Easy shakeout run (20 minutes max). Carbohydrate-load moderately. Avoid unfamiliar foods. Lay out all race gear. Prepare your drop bag with warm clothes for post-finish. |
| Sat May 22 | Trail Marathon and Peace Runs (5km, 10km) start today in the Stadium precinct. If not racing, spectate to absorb race week atmosphere. Absolute rest. Final gear check. Sleep by 9pm. |
| Sun May 23 | Race Day. Early wake-up. Check weather. Elite gun 06:15 SAST, open waves from 06:17. Arrive at your assigned start (Stadium or Beach Road) at least 60 minutes before your wave. Warm, post-race layer in drop bag. |
| Mon May 24 | Recovery. Most runners extend by 2–3 days — strongly recommended. Cape Town is one of the world’s great travel destinations: Table Mountain cable car, Cape Point, Boulders Beach penguins, Cape Winelands. Build it in. |
Budget Planning for Indian Runners (Approximate, 6-Night Trip)
| Expense | Estimated Cost (INR) |
|---|---|
| Return flights (India to Cape Town) | ₹55,000 – ₹1,00,000 |
| Race entry fee (via ITO or charity) | ₹20,000 – ₹40,000 (entry component) |
| Accommodation (6 nights, mid-range Green Point / Sea Point) | ₹35,000 – ₹70,000 (or bundled with ITO) |
| South Africa visa + VFS + insurance | ₹6,000 – ₹10,000 |
| Daily food + local transport (Cape Town, 6 days) | ₹2,000 – ₹3,500 per day |
| Total estimate (6-night trip) | ₹1,50,000 – ₹2,80,000 |
Costs based on 2026 estimates. The South African Rand’s favourable rate against the INR makes Cape Town substantially more affordable on the ground than European or American Majors. Budget conservatively for flights — this is the largest variable cost.
Where to Stay in Cape Town
The race starts and finishes at DHL Stadium in Green Point, making the Green Point–Sea Point–De Waterkant corridor the ideal base. Hotels in this area put you within 15–20 minutes’ walk of the start, the finish, and the Expo. The V&A Waterfront hotels are the premium option with Table Bay and Robben Island views. City Bowl hotels along Long Street and Gardens are more affordable and well connected by ride-share to the race precinct. Sea Point hotels place you on the final 5 km of the course — you can watch runners from your hotel window before heading to the finish. Book 6–9 months out. Cape Town in May also draws European winter-sun visitors and pre-safari travellers.
Cape Town Weather in May — What to Expect
May is autumn in the Southern Hemisphere. Race morning temperatures typically sit between 10–17°C with an average around 14°C — conditions close to optimal for marathon performance. Humidity is moderate. This is a significantly better running climate than Singapore’s heat or New York’s unpredictable October cold snaps.
The wind factor is real. Cape Town is one of the windiest cities in the world. The southeasterly Cape Doctor and cold northwesterly fronts that arrive in May can generate race-disrupting conditions. The 2025 Sanlam Cape Town Marathon was cancelled on race morning after gale-force winds of 60 km/h damaged the start infrastructure less than 90 minutes before the elite gun. The 2026 edition ran in sunshine and produced the fastest marathon ever run on African soil. This is the nature of May in the Cape — check the forecast in the final week before you travel and pack a wind-resistant layer in your drop bag regardless of what it says.
Race Strategy for 4:00–5:30 Runners
Cape Town rewards patience more than almost any other Major. The course feels manageable in the first 25 km — flat roads, cool air, breathtaking scenery, crowd energy at an inaugural Major. The risk is arriving at the UCT climb having spent too much in those opening sections.
The UCT climb (km 25) is where Cape Town races are won or lost for recreational runners. Run the first 22 km at goal pace or 5 seconds per km slower. Ease back slightly on the approach to the climb — not dramatically, but enough to crest it with controlled effort rather than desperation. Runners who arrive at the top of the climb with something left will run the final 15 km strongly. Runners who arrive already spent will find the Sea Point promenade — however beautiful — a long, difficult fight to the finish.
If it is windy: particularly into a headwind on the promenade, throttle back your pace target. Running 10–15 seconds per km slower into a stiff southeasterly is smart racing, not failure. The most important thing at an inaugural Major is to finish well and remember the experience for the right reasons.
Cape Town Marathon Gear Checklist
| Item | Cape Town-Specific Notes |
|---|---|
| Race shoes | Mostly flat course — carbon race shoe works well. Break in thoroughly before race day. |
| Race kit (top + shorts or tights) | Short sleeve at 14°C is fine for most runners. Tested in training — no cotton, no new kit on race day. |
| Disposable warm layer | For the start pen (06:17 is cold). Discard before gun — collected for charity. |
| Arm warmers | Useful for first 10 km — roll down and pocket as you warm up through Woodstock. |
| Thin gloves | May Cape Town mornings can be colder than forecast. Pocketable after km 10. |
| Wind-resistant jacket (drop bag) | Essential. Cape Town wind is real — pack one in your post-race bag regardless of forecast. |
| GPS watch | Disciplined km splits are critical for managing the UCT climb correctly at km 25. |
| Race gels / nutrition | Bring your own practiced gels. Course has water and sports drink stations — verify brand before race day. |
| Anti-chafe cream | Non-negotiable on any race above 30 km. |
| Sunscreen | May Cape Town sun is weaker than summer but UV is still active. Apply before the start. |
| Passport (Expo bib pickup) | Mandatory photo ID for all international runners at bib collection. |
| South African Rand cash | Useful for post-race food at the V&A Waterfront. Cards accepted widely but cash helps at smaller vendors. |
Cape Town Marathon and the Abbott Eight Star Journey
The Cape Town Marathon is the eighth Abbott World Marathon Major. Runners who complete all eight current Majors — Tokyo, Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago, New York, Sydney and Cape Town — earn eight stars in their Abbott WMM Runner Portal. Abbott WMM has established an Eight Star Hall of Fame for these runners.
The Six Star Finisher Medal (for the original six Majors: Tokyo, Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago and New York) remains completely unchanged. Sydney and Cape Town stars are tracked additionally. A Nine Star Medal will be introduced when Shanghai completes its evaluation and joins the series as the ninth Major — Shanghai’s final assessment takes place December 6, 2026.
For Indian runners building toward the Six or Eight Star, Cape Town’s unique position — no qualifying time required, a lottery system with no performance barrier, and the most affordable on-ground costs of any Major — makes it one of the most accessible races to plan. See our complete Six Star Finisher Guide for the recommended race order and full cost breakdown from India.

Yes — and the timing to enter is right now. The 2027 ballot has closed but ITO and charity entries opened June 26. This is the inaugural edition of Africa’s first Abbott World Marathon Major. Eliud Kipchoge ran here in 2026. The course record is the fastest marathon ever run on African soil. The finish in Green Point Park with Table Mountain behind you is one of the great marathon moments available anywhere in the world.
For Indian runners specifically, Cape Town has one structural advantage every other Major lacks: no qualifying time, no performance barrier, and the most favourable currency of any destination in the Eight Star journey. The flight is long and the visa requires planning — but the on-ground cost makes this significantly more accessible than New York, London or Tokyo once you arrive.
Get your ITO or charity entry now. This one will sell out faster than any Cape Town race before it.
