Of all the marathons on the Indian running calendar, the Freshworks Chennai Marathon holds a unique place in my mind — not just because of its credentials, but because of the hour at which it asks you to show up. When I picture the Full Marathon flag-off at Napier Bridge at 4 in the morning, with the sea breeze already cutting through and the city still dark, I understand exactly why Chennai Runners has built one of India’s most respected grassroots running organisations around it. Over 10 years of long-distance running — roads, trails, heat, altitude — I’ve come to believe that a race’s atmosphere tells you more about its soul than its finish-line medal. FCM has atmosphere to spare.
The Freshworks Chennai Marathon 2027 — the 15th edition of what began as a small community run in 2009 — is expected in early January 2027, following the pattern of previous editions. No official date has been announced yet (as of June 2026). The 2026 edition (14th) was held on 4 January 2026 and drew thousands of runners across four distances: 10K, Half Marathon, 20 Miler, and the Full Marathon.
This guide covers everything you need to know: race categories, the coastal course, registration, BIB collection, start times, how to get there, parking, what to carry, and where to stay. Bookmark it — I’ll update it the moment the 2027 date and registration go live.

What is the Freshworks Chennai Marathon?
The Freshworks Chennai Marathon is Tamil Nadu’s flagship road race — and one of the most professionally organised mass-participation marathons in India. It is run by Chennai Runners, a volunteer-driven not-for-profit running club founded in 2006, which turns 20 years old in 2026. That institutional depth shows in every aspect of race day: from the early metro services and dedicated bus shuttles to the women-only aid stations and first-responder-certified pacers.
The race began in 2009 and has grown steadily into what is widely regarded as India’s second-largest marathon by participation. It runs a scenic coastal corridor — from the iconic Napier Bridge and Marina Beach promenade south along the East Coast Road (ECR) to the Indian Maritime University — a route that is both visually spectacular and genuinely fast. Flat, sea-breezed, and held in January when Chennai is at its coolest, it consistently produces some of the strongest Indian finishing times of the year.
The event is AIMS-certified, which means your time is eligible for global rankings and records. From the 2023 edition, it has also been recognised by the Abbott World Marathon Majors (AbbottWMM) Age Group Rankings — one of very few Indian races with this recognition. It also carries the SheRACES accreditation awarded in May 2024, making it a benchmark event for women’s inclusion in Indian running.
For runners I speak with from Delhi and other northern cities who are considering Chennai as a destination race, my consistent answer is: it is worth the trip. The January weather, the flat course, and the quality of the organisation make it one of the most PB-friendly marathons on the Indian calendar.
When is the Chennai Marathon 2027?
The Freshworks Chennai Marathon 2027 (15th edition) has not yet announced an official race date as of June 2026. Based on the consistent pattern of previous editions — all held on the first or second Sunday of January — the 2027 race is expected in early January 2027.
- FCM 2026 (14th edition): Sunday, 4 January 2026
- FCM 2025 (13th edition): Sunday, 5 January 2025
- FCM 2024 (12th edition): Sunday, 6 January 2024
Registration for previous editions typically opened 2–3 months before race day and sold out in advance, particularly for the Full Marathon and Half Marathon categories. I’d recommend setting a reminder to check the official website — thechennaimarathon.com — from October 2026 onwards. Follow Chennai Runners on social media for the earliest announcement.
⚠️ Note: This guide will be updated as soon as the 2027 date and registration are announced. Last updated: June 2026.
What race categories does the Chennai Marathon offer?
One of FCM’s strengths is its distance range. Unlike most Indian marathons that offer only 10K, Half, and Full, Chennai adds the 20 Miler (32.186 km) — a genuinely rare and useful distance that sits between the half and full. Here’s a breakdown of all four categories:
| Category | Distance | Start Point | Start Time | Finish Point |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Full Marathon | 42.195 km | Napier Bridge | 4:00 AM | Indian Maritime University, ECR |
| 20 Miler | 32.186 km | Napier Bridge | 4:00 AM | Indian Maritime University, ECR |
| Half Marathon | 21.097 km | Elliot’s Beach, Besant Nagar | 5:00 AM | Indian Maritime University, ECR |
| 10K Run | 10 km | Napier Bridge | 5:30 AM | CPT Ground, Taramani |
The 20 Miler deserves a special mention. It’s an ideal race for runners building toward a full marathon, or for those who find the Half too short and the Full too daunting at this stage of their training. Very few Indian marathons offer it. If you’ve been hovering between the two, this is your race.
All four distances run on an AIMS-certified course, and times from the Full Marathon and Half Marathon count toward AbbottWMM Age Group Rankings.
What does the Chennai Marathon course look like?
The FCM course is one of the most scenic in India — and among the most strategically flat. It traces Chennai’s iconic coastline from the historic heart of the city south along the East Coast Road, finishing at the Indian Maritime University campus at the edge of the Bay of Bengal. From the first kilometre, you’re running with the sea to your left. In January, at 4 in the morning, with the pre-dawn darkness and the ocean breeze, it is genuinely atmospheric in a way that very few Indian races can match.
Full Marathon (42.195 km): Napier Bridge to Indian Maritime University
The Full Marathon begins at Napier Bridge, one of Chennai’s oldest landmarks over the Cooum River, and runs south through the Marina Beach promenade — the longest urban beach in India — before joining the East Coast Road (ECR) and continuing to the finish at Indian Maritime University. The course is near-flat for almost its entire length. There are no significant elevation gains; this is road-running on coastal flatland, which makes it one of India’s better setups for a marathon PB.
Half Marathon (21.097 km): Elliot’s Beach to Indian Maritime University
Half Marathon runners start separately at Elliot’s Beach in Besant Nagar — the more relaxed, residential cousin of Marina Beach — and join the ECR southbound. The Half is effectively the second half of the Full Marathon course (in reverse logic). Starting at 5:00 AM means you get some early light by the time you’re into the ECR, and the coastal air is still cool. I’ve run pre-dawn half marathons in similar conditions and the freshness of that window is hard to overstate — it’s the best 90 minutes of the day to be running.
20 Miler (32.186 km): Napier Bridge to Indian Maritime University
The 20 Miler shares the Napier Bridge start with the Full Marathon and runs at the same 4:00 AM flag-off. You cover more of the Marina promenade stretch before joining the ECR, giving you the widest visual variety of any distance bar the Full. If you’re on a marathon build and want to race-simulate the first 32 km of a full with proper race support and chip timing, this is genuinely excellent race infrastructure to do it on.
10K Run: Napier Bridge to CPT Ground, Taramani
The 10K starts at Napier Bridge at 5:30 AM — by which point dawn is breaking, the Marathon and 20 Miler runners are well into the ECR, and the city is starting to stir. The route runs inland to CPT Ground in Taramani rather than along the ECR, giving it a different character from the other three distances. It is an ideal entry point for first-timers in Chennai’s running scene and for corporate teams (FCM has strong corporate participation with dedicated group registrations).
Is the Chennai Marathon course flat enough for a PB attempt?
Yes — with a clear qualification. The course is one of the flattest in India, running through Chennai’s coastal terrain with negligible elevation change across all four distances. The official race description calls it “near-flat,” and the AIMS-certified measurements confirm no significant gradient on the racing line. For runners targeting a Full or Half PB, the course itself is not the limiting factor.
The variable to manage is January weather. Even in Chennai’s coolest month, temperatures can climb into the mid-20s Celsius as the morning progresses. The 4:00 AM Full Marathon start is specifically designed to get runners as far into the ECR as possible before the sun is fully up. If you’re targeting a PB on the Full, negative-splitting this course — running the first 21 km conservatively and opening up on the ECR — is the right strategy. The sea breeze on the ECR is real and meaningful; veteran Chennai runners will tell you it’s one of the reasons the course runs fast despite the humidity.
I’d compare the PB potential here favourably with the Wipro Bengaluru Marathon — Bengaluru’s course has more rolling terrain. Chennai’s flat-coast setup edges it for raw time performance, though Bengaluru’s elevation (900m) gives a temperature advantage in late September.
How do I register for the Chennai Marathon 2027?
Registration for the Freshworks Chennai Marathon opens on the official website: thechennaimarathon.com. There is no third-party aggregator registration for FCM — all signups, including corporate registrations, go through the Chennai Runners portal directly.
Based on previous editions, registration typically opens in October–November ahead of the January race. The Full Marathon and Half Marathon categories are the first to fill up. If you are targeting one of these — especially the Full — I’d suggest registering within the first week of registration opening.
Corporate registrations are handled separately via corporateregistration@chennairunners.in. Companies can register teams for group participation with a dedicated corporate group photograph and expo presence.
Check Registration Status on Official Site →How much does Chennai Marathon registration cost?
Registration fees vary by category and change between editions. The 2027 pricing has not yet been announced. Based on the 2026 edition, fees were tiered by distance — with the Full Marathon carrying the highest entry fee and the 10K the lowest. Expect the Full Marathon to be priced competitively with other major Indian marathons (typically in the ₹1,500–₹3,000+ range for early-bird, rising to higher tiers as race day approaches).
Fees are non-refundable and non-transferable once confirmed. Merchandise orders (race tees, etc.) placed at registration are also non-refundable.
Can I transfer my Chennai Marathon BIB to someone else?
No. FCM registration is strictly non-transferable. Your BIB is linked to your identity and serves as the primary identification in case of a medical emergency on course. Attempting to run under another person’s BIB is a safety and integrity issue — the race organisers enforce this seriously. If you cannot run, your entry cannot be transferred or deferred. Plan accordingly.
Where and when is the Chennai Marathon BIB collection?
BIB collection at the Freshworks Chennai Marathon is mandatory in-person at the pre-race Expo, held 1–2 days before race day. The Expo venue is announced by Chennai Runners closer to the race date.
Key rules to know:
- Every participant must collect their BIB at the Expo. There is no race-day BIB collection.
- If you genuinely cannot attend due to unavoidable reasons, an authorised representative may collect on your behalf. The exact proxy process and required documents are communicated by Chennai Runners via email ahead of the Expo.
- Finishers without a BIB on race day will not be eligible for a finisher medal.
- Your timing chip is integrated into the BIB — pin it to your race T-shirt the night before rather than scrambling on race morning.
- The Expo also offers free Chennai Metro QR codes for race-day travel — collect yours here.
The Expo is also where you’ll find sponsor activations, merchandise, and pace-group information. If you’re coming from outside Chennai, factor the Expo day into your travel plan — budget at least two nights in the city (Expo day + race day eve).
What are the Chennai Marathon start times and reporting schedule?
FCM’s staggered start times are designed to minimise road congestion and maximise safety windows before Chennai traffic builds. The Full Marathon’s 4:00 AM start is particularly early — even by Indian marathon standards — and is one of the features that defines FCM’s character. Here is the full 2026 schedule (expect similar timings in 2027):
| Category | Reporting Time | Flag-Off | Start Venue |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full Marathon (42K) | 3:30 AM | 4:00 AM | Napier Bridge |
| 20 Miler (32K) | 3:30 AM | 4:00 AM | Napier Bridge |
| Half Marathon (21K) | 4:30 AM | 5:00 AM | Elliot’s Beach |
| 10K Run | 5:00 AM | 5:30 AM | Napier Bridge |
Arrive at your start zone at least 30 minutes before your flag-off time, as advised by the organisers. This allows time for bag drop, a group warm-up, and settling into your corral. For Full and 20 Miler runners arriving at Napier Bridge at 3:30 AM, the city will be nearly empty — lean into the metro or pre-arranged transport rather than trying to drive and park in the dark.
Cut-off (Full Marathon): The 28 km checkpoint must be reached within 4 hours 30 minutes of start (i.e., by 8:30 AM). Runners who have not crossed this point by cut-off time will be pulled off the course. Plan your pacing accordingly if you are targeting a slower full marathon finish.
How do I get to the Chennai Marathon start line?
Getting to your start venue without stress is half the battle on a race morning — especially when the Full Marathon requires you to be at Napier Bridge at 3:30 AM. Here is everything you need to know about reaching each start point.
How to reach Napier Bridge (Full Marathon, 20 Miler, 10K start)
Napier Bridge is located in central Chennai, on the Cooum River near the Marina Beach promenade. It is well-connected from most parts of the city. Key access routes:
- From Anna Salai (Mount Road) or Wallajah Road — use these rather than Marina Beach Road or Santhome, which will be closed before race day.
- Avoid: Marina Beach Road, Santhome High Road, MRC Nagar. The Victory War Memorial stretch is blocked on race day.
- Pre-dawn auto or cab: book in advance the night before. Ola/Uber surge pricing at 3 AM is real — pre-book if the platform allows it.
How to reach Elliot’s Beach (Half Marathon start, Besant Nagar)
- Access via 1st Avenue, Shastri Nagar, or MG Road, Shastri Nagar.
- Besant Avenue will be closed from 4:00 AM on race day.
- If driving, plan your route to arrive before 4:00 AM to avoid road closures, even though the Half flag-off is at 5:00 AM.
Can I use the Chennai Metro on race day?
Yes — and this is genuinely one of the best features of FCM. Chennai Runners coordinates with the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) to provide complimentary round-trip metro travel for all registered runners on race day. Metro services begin at 3:00 AM — well ahead of normal operating hours.
How it works:
- Your BIB (collected at the Expo) will include a QR code for metro access.
- Simply show the QR code at any metro station entry.
- Valid for travel from any Chennai Metro station — so you can board close to where you’re staying.
- The return trip (post-race, from the finish area) is also covered.
I cannot emphasise this enough: use the metro. The road closures, the 3:30 AM reporting time, and the limited parking make it by far the least stressful way to start race day. This is the same logic I apply when advising runners on how to reach the start of the Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon — metro-first, always.
How do I get back from the finish line after the race?
Post-race transport is arranged by Ashok Leyland (the race’s powered-by partner), and buses run from the finish venue at Indian Maritime University, ECR back to the city. This service is available for finishers of the Full Marathon, 20 Miler, and Half Marathon.
The 10K finishes at CPT Ground, Taramani — closer to the city — so return transport is more straightforward. Details of exact bus routes and drop points are communicated by Chennai Runners closer to race day.
Where should I park for the Chennai Marathon?
Parking on race day is limited. Road closures around the start venues begin well before flag-off. If you’re driving, plan your approach well in advance.
Full Marathon, 20 Miler & 10K (Napier Bridge start):
- Designated parking: University of Madras campus (both 4-wheeler and 2-wheeler).
- Avoid Marina Beach Road, Santhome High Road, MRC Nagar, and the Victory War Memorial stretch — all blocked.
- Approach via Wallajah Road or Anna Salai.
Half Marathon (Elliot’s Beach, Besant Nagar):
- 4-wheeler parking: 4th Avenue (opposite Rajaji Bhavan), 3rd Main Road, 2nd Avenue (opposite Vishranti).
- 2-wheeler parking: 1st Cross Street, 2nd Cross Street, 3rd Main Road, 2nd Avenue (opposite Vishranti).
- Besant Avenue closed from 4:00 AM. Access via 1st Avenue or Shastri Nagar.
My honest recommendation: unless you have a specific reason to drive, don’t. The free metro from 3:00 AM removes the single biggest logistical headache of race morning for FCM runners.
What should I carry on Chennai Marathon race day?
Having run marathons and halfs across India in varying conditions, the Chennai January morning kit comes down to a fairly tight list. The organisers specifically advise against shoulder bags on the course — baggage counters are available near all start points for anything you don’t want to carry.
Essential:
- BIB pinned to T-shirt — timing chip is integrated. Do this the night before.
- Metro QR code — on your BIB or on your phone. Screenshot it.
- Race nutrition: Gels, energy chews, or dates — whatever you’ve trained with. Don’t experiment on race day. For a Full or 20 Miler, carry enough for the distance.
- Electrolytes: January humidity in Chennai is manageable but real. Carry ORS sachets or electrolyte tabs, especially for the Full.
- Hydration: Aid stations are placed at regular intervals. For the Full and 20 Miler starting at 4 AM, I’d carry a small handheld or vest until sunrise and then lean on aid stations.
- Light: A small headlamp or clip-on blinker for the pre-dawn stretches of the Full and 20 Miler start. The course is lit, but the start area can be dimly lit at 3:30 AM.
- Sunscreen: For the Full Marathon especially — you’ll be running into late morning as the sun builds on the ECR. Apply before you leave the hotel.
- Phone: Fully charged. Share your live tracking link with your support crew before the race.
Optional but useful:
- Lightweight rain jacket (January mornings can have a chill near the coast)
- Arm warmers to discard after 10–12 km if you run cold at the start
- Anti-chafe balm (non-negotiable for the Full)
Leave behind:
- Shoulder bags on the course — drop everything at baggage counters
- Headphones on both ears (race etiquette; single ear or bone conduction preferred)
- Cash (not needed; medal, water, and bus return are all included)
Medical support on course: Ambulances with doctors and paramedics are stationed along the route. Certified first responders wear red T-shirts and are easy to identify. All FCM pacers are first-responder (FR) certified. Women-only aid stations are available with sanitary pads and pain relief medication. If you need help at any point, find a red T-shirt.
Where should I stay for the Chennai Marathon?
Accommodation choice for FCM depends on which distance you’re running — since the Full/20M/10K start at Napier Bridge (central city) and the Half starts at Elliot’s Beach (Besant Nagar, southern Chennai).
For Full Marathon, 20 Miler, and 10K runners:
Stay in central Chennai — areas like Triplicane, Marina Beach Road hotels, Nungambakkam, or Egmore place you within 2–4 km of Napier Bridge. For a 3:30 AM reporting time, being this close means you can leave at 3:00 AM and still reach comfortably on metro or a short cab ride. The stretch along the Marina has several hotel options at various price points, though book early — January is tourist and running season in Chennai.
For Half Marathon runners:
Besant Nagar, Adyar, or Thiruvanmiyur are the most convenient neighbourhoods. Elliot’s Beach is a residential, quieter area and hotel density is lower than central Chennai — boutique stays and service apartments work well here. Adyar gives you easy access to both the start and the ECR finish via cab or metro.
Travelling from outside Chennai?
Build a minimum two-night stay — arriving at least the evening before the Expo (2 nights before race day), so you can collect your BIB at the Expo without rush, sleep well, and race the next morning. I’ve made the mistake of arriving the morning of an Expo after a flight; it adds unnecessary stress.
Chennai airport (MAA) is well-connected with direct flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Kolkata. Train connectivity to Chennai Central and Chennai Egmore is excellent from across South India. The metro connects Chennai Central directly to central city areas near Napier Bridge.

Is the Chennai Marathon an Abbott World Marathon Majors qualifier?
Yes. Since the 2023 edition, the Freshworks Chennai Marathon has been officially recognised by Abbott World Marathon Majors (AbbottWMM) for its Age Group Rankings. This is a significant credential — one of very few Indian races with AbbottWMM recognition.
What this means in practice:
- Times set at FCM count toward the AbbottWMM Age Group Rankings, which rank runners globally across age brackets.
- Runners who achieve the Automatic Qualifying Time (AQT) for their age group earn a direct entry into the AbbottWMM MTT Age Group World Championships.
- This makes FCM one of the most internationally connected Indian marathons for competitive age-group runners who are building toward a World Championship entry.
The AIMS certification of the course is what underpins this — your time is measured to international standards, making it eligible for global ranking submissions. For Indian runners chasing a WMM six-star finish or building toward an Age Group World Championship place, FCM is a logical domestic qualifier to target.
For more on India’s major marathons and how they connect to international circuits, see the India Marathon Calendar.
Can I run the Chennai Marathon for charity?
Yes. The Freshworks Chennai Marathon has a dedicated charity programme that allows registered runners to fundraise for partner NGOs covering health, education, environment, sports, and arts. Runners can add a charity contribution at registration, and FCM’s 2025 edition recorded its highest-ever fundraising total — a reflection of how seriously the Chennai Runners community takes the social impact of its flagship event.
Details of the 2027 charity partners will be announced on the official website. If charitable running is important to your race choice — and for many Indian runners it increasingly is — FCM has the infrastructure to support it meaningfully.
FatMarathoner Bottom Line
Should you run the Freshworks Chennai Marathon?
After more than a decade of running in India, I’d put the Freshworks Chennai Marathon in my top three domestic marathons alongside the Tata Mumbai Marathon and Wipro Bengaluru Marathon. The coastal course is genuinely flat and fast, the January weather is the best running climate Chennai offers, the 4 AM start is unique in its atmosphere, and Chennai Runners delivers a level of race-day organisation that punches well above its volunteer-run structure.
The Abbott WMM Age Group Rankings recognition makes it a serious qualifier for international age-group runners. The 20 Miler distance is rare and genuinely valuable for marathon builders. Free metro from 3 AM is thoughtful, practical race infrastructure.
The only variables to plan around: the pre-dawn logistics (a 3:30 AM Napier Bridge reporting time demands strategic hotel choice and transport planning), and Chennai’s humidity, which can build if you’re running a slower full marathon into late morning. Both are manageable with preparation.
| Course | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Near-flat, coastal, AIMS-certified |
| Organisation | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Volunteer-run, deeply professional |
| PB Potential | ⭐⭐⭐⭐½ Excellent — manage the humidity |
| Atmosphere | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Pre-dawn sea breeze, coastal beauty |
| Logistics | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Free metro + bus return — plan hotel carefully |
| International Cred | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ AbbottWMM Age Group qualifier + SheRACES |
Verdict: Run it. Whether you’re targeting a PB, chasing an AbbottWMM Age Group ranking, or simply want one of India’s great marathon experiences — the Freshworks Chennai Marathon belongs on your race calendar.
