Breaking the 19 hour barrier at UTMB used to sound like bad math. The elevation profile alone demands respect but American ultrarunner Ben Dhiman just rewrote the playbook. After two previous DNF results in 2023 and 2024 and a runner up finish in 2025 he returned to Chamonix and delivered a performance that will be studied for years.
- Winner: Ben Dhiman wins with an 18:16:29 finish.
- Record: First person to break the 19 hour barrier.
- Margin: Time is 45:25 faster than the quickest winning time in race history.
Ben Dhiman’s UTMB 2026 Race Strategy and Moves
Dhiman did not just win. He systematically dismantled the elite field. Taking the lead right around the 41 kilometer mark is a bold move in a 100 mile mountain race but he backed it up. Running largely solo from that point forward he built a massive 19 minute lead by the 80 kilometer mark and extended it to 28 minutes by 127 kilometers.
What makes this even wilder is that he suffered a hard fall with just 10 kilometers left to run and still finished more than 30 minutes clear of the rest of the field. He trusted his instinct over rigid pacing plans noting that his running was done on an instinctual level built from deep preparation.
| Position | Runner | Time |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | Ben Dhiman | 18:16:29 |
| 2nd | Baptiste Chassagne | 18:47:38 |
| 3rd | Caleb Olson | 18:48:24 |
A Masterclass in Instinct and Training
If you want to replicate his success you might be surprised by his training philosophy. He focuses on consistency above all else with just two non negotiable hard days a week treating the rest of his volume as play. In the final 12 weeks before UTMB he actually cut his high intensity sessions in half while raising his overall volume by 30 percent. He believes in training with the grain rather than against it.
