Tiangong Ultra Wins 100m Final in 8.64 Seconds: The Record Fell Four Times This Week

8.64 seconds. That is the number Tiangong Ultra left Beijing with on Wednesday night, winning the 100m final at the closing ceremony of the 2nd World Humanoid Robot Games. It is the fourth time this week the record fell at the same venue, in the same event, run by the same machine.

Four days ago, 9.39 seconds felt like a headline. Then 9.34. Then 9.32. Then 8.86 in Tuesday’s semifinal. Every time you thought the number had settled, Tiangong Ultra went back out and moved it again. The final, on closing night, was the fastest of them all.

For context: Usain Bolt ran 9.58 seconds in Berlin in 2009. That is still the human world record. Tiangong just ran nearly a full second faster, in a head-to-head final against Honor’s Lightning, the robot that holds the humanoid half-marathon world record.

Tiangong vs Lightning: The Rivalry That Defined the Week

Honor’s Lightning came into this final with serious pedigree. In April, Lightning won the 2nd Beijing E-Town Humanoid Robot Half Marathon in 50 minutes 26 seconds, beating Uganda’s Jacob Kiplimo’s human world record of 57:20 by nearly seven minutes. In Tuesday’s repechage, Lightning ran 8.94 seconds, its fastest time of the games and well inside the human record. Tonight’s final set up as a genuine contest: Lightning’s faster start and acceleration against Tiangong’s higher top-end speed and the ability to close hard in the back half. That pattern had played out in the opening heat on Saturday, when Tiangong trailed early and overtook Lightning near the line.

That applied research feeds into how sports scientists and footwear labs understand human running mechanics, stride efficiency and injury prevention. Nike and Adidas run biomechanics labs. Both will have been watching Beijing closely this week.

Second, the pace of improvement is unlike anything in human athletics. Last year, Tiangong Ultra won this same event in 21.50 seconds. In 12 months, that time dropped to 8.64. It took human sprinters nearly a century to move the 100m world record from 10.6 seconds to 9.58. Robots did more than that in one year, and then improved again within the same five-day event.

Half-marathon context: Honor’s Lightning holds the humanoid robot half-marathon record at 50:26, set in Beijing in April 2026. That is a separate event from the WHRG sprint programme. The two robots have now each held the marquee record in their respective speciality distances.

Whatever caveats you apply about testing conditions, surface specifications and the absence of athletics governing body oversight, the engineering trend line is clear. A year ago this event was won in 21.50 seconds. Tonight it was won in 8.64. For everyone who works in running, coaching, footwear or biomechanics, that trajectory is the number worth sitting with.
