There is no night in the running calendar quite like this one. When Las Vegas Boulevard closes for runners, it closes completely — 26,000 people moving under full neon from a pyrotechnic start line in front of New York-New York toward a finish at the Bellagio, with live bands every half mile and the entire city watching. Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas is not a race with entertainment bolted on. It is a night out that happens to have 13.1 miles in the middle of it.

The 2027 edition runs across the weekend of 20–21 February. The 5K goes first on Saturday evening, starting near the Downtown Las Vegas Events Center and finishing on Fremont Street under SlotZilla. Sunday belongs to the half marathon and 10K, starting at 4:30 PM when the Strip has been handed over to runners and the desert sky is fading fast. Registration is open now and this event has a consistent track record of selling out well ahead of race day — earlier price tiers offer the best value and tend to go quickly.

Who is this race for? Anyone who has trained hard enough to run 13.1 miles and wants to do it against the most visually extraordinary urban backdrop in the world. It is the race you run in a costume, the one you sign a group of friends up for, the event you put on the list when you want a destination race that doubles as a proper weekend away. People fly in from every continent for this. The race has had runners from Dublin celebrating a birthday, from London chasing a bucket-list tick and from every US state looking for something they have never seen at a start line before.

One thing worth understanding before you register: this is not where you run your fastest half marathon. The altitude, the adrenaline and the sheer spectacle of the Strip will pull your pacing discipline apart before you hit mile two. Train here, race somewhere quieter if a personal best is the priority. But if you want a finish line that looks like the end of a film, Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas delivers on that premise harder than any race on the calendar.

What Makes Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas Worth Running?

The Only Night Las Vegas Boulevard Shuts Down for Runners

There are city races with scenic routes and road closures. Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas is in a different category entirely. The entire Las Vegas Strip — from New York-New York in the south to the Bellagio and beyond — closes exclusively for the race. No sharing with traffic, no narrow corridors between plastic barriers. You run down the full width of one of the most photographed streets on earth with nobody else on it except tens of thousands of other runners, the neon fully lit and the city in its best Friday night clothes. That does not happen anywhere else in running.

A Start Line That Goes Off With a Bang

The half marathon start in front of New York-New York includes a live pyrotechnic display that detonates as the first corral moves. It is properly loud. It lights up the casino facade. It sends 26,000 runners forward into the night at a pace they absolutely should not be running. The corral system puts you among runners at similar finish times, but no amount of training preparation fully prepares you for how fast you want to go in the first 60 seconds after a start like this. As opening race experiences go, it is among the most memorable on any circuit in the world.

Live Music and Entertainment Every Half Mile

Bands, DJs, dancers and hype squads are staged along the full course length. Rock ‘n’ Roll Running Series events are built around in-race entertainment and Las Vegas is the flagship event in the series — you rarely run 15 minutes without passing a stage. Genre changes at each stop keep the energy shifting. When the course turns quieter north of the Venetian around miles 8-9 and fatigue starts compounding, a stage tends to appear at exactly the moment the legs start to complain. It sounds gimmicky. In practice it works.

The 5K Is a Completely Different Experience

The Saturday 5K runs through Downtown Las Vegas and finishes on Fremont Street under SlotZilla, the world’s largest slot machine. Downtown Vegas has a rawer, more authentic energy than the Strip and finishing under the Fremont Street Experience LED canopy — with the crowd and the lights converging overhead — is genuinely special. Sign up for both the 5K and a Sunday distance and you automatically qualify for the Remix Challenge Medal, a third piece of hardware collected at the Remix tent near the finish line festival.

Three Medals, One Weekend

Each finisher collects a distance medal. Run the Saturday 5K and any Sunday distance and you also earn the Remix Challenge Medal for completing both. On top of that, the Heavy Medals Programme rewards runners who complete two or more Rock ‘n’ Roll events in the same calendar year with sequential bonus medals. For anyone who runs to collect hardware, this is the most efficient weekend in the series — three potential medals in under 24 hours of racing.

Who This Race Actually Suits

Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas is built for bucket-list runners and groups. It suits first-timers to the half marathon distance who want an experience over a time goal. It suits runners with a Las Vegas trip already on the calendar who want something to anchor the weekend. It suits costume runners, social runners and anyone who has been looking for a reason to get a group of friends into a city together. The elite field is legitimate — the 2026 men’s winner crossed in 1:05:09 — but the heart of this race is the tens of thousands of people in the middle of the pack running one of the world’s great cities under full neon.

The Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas Course — What You Are Running Into

Half Marathon Course at a Glance
  • Distance: 13.1 miles / 21.1 km
  • Start: Las Vegas Blvd at New York-New York Hotel (south Strip)
  • Finish: Las Vegas Blvd at The Bellagio (mid-Strip)
  • Layout: Out-and-back on Las Vegas Boulevard — south first, then north, with a final return south to the Bellagio finish
  • Surface: Asphalt, fully closed, smooth throughout
  • Elevation profile: Largely flat — total elevation impact approximately 0.5% slower than a genuinely flat course. The northbound sections carry a subtle grade invisible to the eye and to most elevation charts
  • Altitude: Approx 600 m / 2,000 ft ASL throughout
  • Aid stations: Approximately every 1.5–2 miles
  • Race time: 4:30 PM start — the Strip is under full neon for the entire race
  • Cut-off: 4 hours

Course maps and configurations are subject to change year to year. Always verify on the official course page before race day. Maps for 2027 will be published closer to the event.

Miles 0–3: The Pyrotechnic Launch South

The course heads south from New York-New York along closed Las Vegas Boulevard. Pyrotechnics go off at the send-off. The MGM Grand is on your right, Mandalay Bay comes up ahead and the iconic Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign appears around mile two to two and a half. This is the trap section of the race. There is a barely perceptible south-leaning grade on this initial outbound leg that makes pace feel easier than it should. Combined with the pyrotechnics, the crowd noise and the visual overload of running a closed Strip at night, the natural pace through here is 15-20 seconds per mile faster than target for almost everyone. Most recreational runners do not register this until they are deep into mile 10.

Miles 3–7: Reversing North Through the Heart of the Strip

After the southern turnaround the course reverses and you head north through the heart of Las Vegas Boulevard. You pass the start area again — fresh crowd energy, new spectators who arrived after the gun — and continue north. The Bellagio comes into view and then passes on your left. This is a key pacing moment. If you are more than 10-15 seconds per mile ahead of target as the Bellagio fountains slide past you heading north, pull back now. Once you pass the Bellagio on the way to Caesars Palace and The LINQ, the crowd gradually thins and self-correction becomes harder. Miles four through seven are some of the most beautiful running miles in any city race — wide closed road, enormous lit hotel facades and music stages at regular intervals.

Miles 7–11: North of the Venetian — the Race’s Real Test

This is where the race actually happens for most of the field. North of the Venetian and Fontainebleau toward the upper Strip, two things occur simultaneously: the spectator density drops and the invisible northward grade begins collecting its toll. Las Vegas Valley is not flat. The terrain rises gently north through the corridor, imperceptible at mile one and quietly devastating at mile nine on legs that have already covered more than halfway. The elevation chart will not warn you about this. Runners who kept pace through the early miles will find this section manageable. Runners who did not will discover the cost at precisely miles 9-11.

Miles 11–13.1: South to the Bellagio Finish

The northern turnaround brings relief. The final leg runs south toward the finish, with the Bellagio visible or at least the glow of it above the Strip roofline. Everything is heavier than it was at the start but the finish is coming and the crowd builds again as you approach. The finish line on Las Vegas Boulevard in front of the Bellagio is one of the great finishes in half marathon running. Cross it however you need to and collect what you earned.

Race Strategy — Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas Half Marathon

Where recreational runners blow up — miles 9–11: On the northbound push past Venetian, the combination of accumulated fatigue, reduced crowd noise and the invisible grade breaks pacing discipline consistently. It is not a dramatic collapse — pace drops 30-60 seconds per mile and stays there through the finish. This is the part of the race that does not appear on any marketing image. Plan for it specifically in training and in your race plan.

What the course feels like early versus what it does later: The first three miles heading south feel genuinely easy. The pyrotechnic start, the noise, the slight downslope and the neon overhead make the opening pace feel like a warm-up effort. It is not. The exact same variables that make miles 1-3 feel effortless are working in reverse from miles 8-11. Run the first three miles with discipline that feels almost boring. If it feels comfortable and controlled, you are probably doing it right.

Pacing landmark — use the Bellagio: The first time you pass the Bellagio heading north (around miles 4-5), check your watch and compare your current pace against your goal. If you are running more than 15 seconds per mile ahead of target, ease up before the Venetian comes into view. The Bellagio pass is your last easy correction window — once you are past it and heading toward the upper Strip, the thinner crowd makes it much harder to hold yourself back psychologically.

Altitude and desert dehydration: Las Vegas sits at approximately 600 m / 2,000 ft above sea level. This is not high altitude by mountain race standards but it is real and it adds roughly 1-2% to your aerobic effort at any given pace. More importantly, the dry desert air (typically 20-40% humidity) masks how much you are sweating. Drink at every aid station regardless of whether you feel thirsty. Dehydration in Las Vegas shows up later than in humid conditions and tends to show up hard.

Temperature drop through the race: You will start in approximately 10-13°C and finish somewhere around 7-10°C an hour or more later. The start village is exposed and waiting in corrals feels cold. Bring a disposable layer or old long-sleeve you can shed at the gun. Once moving you will warm up quickly but the finish area after you stop is cool. Pack a change of clothes for the finish line festival.

February in Las Vegas is generally excellent for racing. Expect cool, clear evenings with very low humidity and occasional wind. Las Vegas Boulevard acts as a corridor between casino towers and can funnel crosswinds in unpredictable directions — in 2026 the wind hit 28 km/h at race time, which is noticeable on an exposed road but not race-wrecking for most people. The more significant weather variable is the dry air. At 20-40% humidity and 2,000 feet above sea level, sweat evaporates before you notice it and dehydration arrives without the usual signals. Drink at every aid station regardless of how you feel. Pack lip balm and consider carrying your own water in the early miles before you hit the first station. Dress in layers you can shed at the start line — the start village wait in corrals can be cold, but you will warm up quickly once moving.

Jessa Hanson won the women’s race having decided to enter just three days before race day — she ran professionally for Adidas and crossed more than three minutes ahead of the previous year’s women’s winner. An international dimension to the 10K: Sam Juson of Hereford, England, won the men’s race at 31:57, part of a group of Irish and British runners who were in Las Vegas for a birthday trip and decided running the Strip at night seemed like a reasonable thing to add to the itinerary. Spectator Logistics — What to Know Before Race Day

Las Vegas Boulevard closes to vehicle traffic from approximately 2:00 PM on Sunday. Rideshare vehicles and taxis cannot cross the Strip once closures begin — plan your viewing positions before this window. The Las Vegas Monorail runs on the east side of the Strip and is completely unaffected by road closures, making it the best way to hop between viewing spots during the race. Stations cover the full course corridor: MGM Grand, Bally’s/Paris, Flamingo/Caesars Palace, Harrah’s/The LINQ, Las Vegas Convention Center and SLS/Encore. A day pass gives you unlimited trips between stops. For the Saturday 5K, the Downtown Loop shuttle is a useful alternative to rideshare and runs between the Strip and the Fremont Street area. The Saturday Night Runners Party at the Downtown Las Vegas Events Center requires a free wristband — pick up at the Resorts World expo before Saturday 5K start time.

Where to Stay for Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas 2027

The strategic advantage of this race is that the hotels on Las Vegas Boulevard are essentially on the course. Book early — race weekend hotel rates in Las Vegas inflate significantly in the final weeks before the event and official race hotel blocks typically sell before open-market rates climb. The official accommodations page publishes 2027 hotel block availability as the event approaches. Rates listed below are historical reference points from the 2026 event — actual 2027 rates will vary.

Getting to Las Vegas and Around the Strip

International flights: Harry Reid International Airport (LAS) is one of the busiest airports in the United States with direct routes from London Heathrow, Mexico City, Tokyo Narita, Vancouver, Toronto and other international hubs. The majority of international runners connect through US gateway airports including Los Angeles (LAX), San Francisco (SFO), New York JFK or Chicago O’Hare, where direct Las Vegas flights are frequent and often inexpensive.

Airport to Strip: LAS is approximately 5 miles / 8 km from the Strip. Rideshare (Uber or Lyft) is the most practical option — expect 20-30 minutes and $15-25 USD depending on traffic and surge pricing. Taxis queue outside arrivals terminals. There is no direct rail link between LAS and the Strip. The Las Vegas Monorail does not extend to the airport.

Getting around race weekend: The Las Vegas Monorail runs along the east side of Las Vegas Boulevard from MGM Grand in the south to the SLS/Encore station in the north, covering the full race corridor. It is the most reliable way to reach the expo at Resorts World, move between hotels and access spectator spots on race day without being affected by Strip road closures. Multi-day passes offer the best value for a race weekend. Las Vegas Boulevard itself closes to vehicles from approximately 2:00 PM on Sunday — rideshare cannot cross the closed zone. Plan transport accordingly.

Gear check logistics: UPS Gear Check for Sunday races opens around 2:00 PM near the start village on Park Ave and closes at 4:15 PM. Drop-off is on Park Ave outside Park MGM. Pick-up after the race is at Las Vegas Blvd at The Cosmopolitan, closing at 10:00 PM.

A Short History of Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas

The race underneath all the neon and pyrotechnics is one of the oldest marathons in the United States. The first Las Vegas Marathon ran in 1967 when Morris Aarbo of Canada crossed in 2:23:06 at the head of a field that included two runners from Turkey. For its first decade it stayed small, drawing mostly local runners, with the Las Vegas Track Club taking over organisation from the Las Vegas Sun newspaper in 1969. It was the kind of event that peaked at under 200 finishers in bad years and ticked along without much national attention.

The modern era started in 1983 when race director Al Boka took over and set about building something bigger. The initial version of his new course was designed to be fast — too fast, as it turned out, on the quads of most participants. Adjustments in 1986 produced a more manageable route and the same year brought age-group prize money and a half marathon option to the program. By 1992 there were more than 2,000 entrants. The race changed ownership twice in the 2000s — to Devine Racing in 2005 and then to Competitor Group in 2009. It was under Competitor Group that the event became Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas and the night race format arrived: the Strip closed, the bands deployed, the pyrotechnics installed at the start. The full marathon distance ran its last edition in 2019. The event now runs as the world’s largest nighttime half marathon plus 10K and 5K, drawing 26,000 or more participants per year from around the world. What started as a small road race in 1967 would be unrecognisable to its founders. What it has become is genuinely one of a kind.

FatMarathoner Verdict — Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas

Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas is the most fun you will have at a half marathon. There is no real competition for that title. If a personal best is the priority, go train for this one and race somewhere flat and cold in January. The altitude, the adrenaline and the visual overload of running a closed Strip at night will take minutes off whatever time you thought you were going to run. But if you want the finish line that actually looks like something — the pyrotechnic start in front of New York-New York, 13.1 miles of the most recognised road in the world under full neon, Bellagio fountains at the finish — nothing else comes close. Respect the course: miles 9-11 on the northbound leg will find runners who went out too fast, every single time. The altitude is real enough for coastal runners to notice. The desert air dehydrates you faster than you expect. Know these things, plan for them and you will have one of the great running weekends of your life. Book early, budget for the full weekend, pack something ridiculous to wear, drink at every aid station and run with your eyes actually open. The city has seen everything. A closed Strip full of runners under neon is still one of the things it does better than anywhere on earth.

Best for: Bucket-list runners · Destination race seekers · Groups and first-timers · Costume runners · Anyone who wants an experience over a time

Consider alternatives if: A half marathon personal best is the primary goal · You prefer low-stimulation race environments · Large crowds at night are not for you
