The headline from Thursday’s press conference is 78,000 — a record main race quota for the Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon 2027. But the more significant announcement is a 5km race that does not require you to be a marathon runner at all.
What the Record Numbers Actually Mean
The 2027 edition, set for Sunday January 17, will be the largest in the race’s history. The half marathon quota has been lifted by 4,000 to 29,000, a 16% increase that the organiser explicitly frames as a response to runners using the half as a stepping stone toward the full distance. Add the 10km, wheelchair race and full marathon allocations and the main race total hits 78,000. Factor in the new Saturday events and 84,000 runners will take part across the weekend. For context, last year’s ballot drew 120,000 applicants for a smaller field. Demand is not the problem.
The half marathon expansion is the smart call here. Anyone who has tried to get into SCHKM knows the full marathon ballot is brutal. Widening the half marathon pool means more runners who have been training seriously actually get a start line, rather than spending another year on the waitlist.
The 5km Harbourfront Run Is the Real Story
Hong Kong’s biggest race is quietly becoming a running festival that does not require you to run 42km to be part of it. The brand-new 5km Harbourfront Run on Saturday January 16 starts at Kai Tak Sports Park, runs along the Kai Tak Promenade and finishes at Shing Kai Road Garden on a flat, scenic waterfront course. Quota is 3,000. It is open to wheelchair runners. The organiser has designed it explicitly for beginners, families and seniors.
That last detail matters. The Western Harbour Crossing and Stonecutters Bridge make SCHKM one of the most iconic race courses in Asia, but they also make it a race that demands significant training commitment and a qualifying race certificate just to enter. A flat 5km on a waterfront promenade has none of those barriers. If the goal is to bring a new generation of runners into the sport in Hong Kong, this is the right format to do it with.
The Youth Run, for 10 to 15-year-olds, also runs on the same Saturday with a quota of 3,000, up from 2,500 last year.
The Charity Programme Is Now a HKD 15 Million Operation
The Marathon Charity Programme raised a record HKD 15 million in 2026, supporting 50 local NGOs across Children and Youth, Rehabilitation and Health Care and Diversity and Inclusion. For runners who miss the public ballot, the charity programme remains the guaranteed-entry route — and it is getting bigger each year. Worth knowing before the ballot result lands.

Who Should Be Paying Attention to SCHKM 2027
If you are a runner who has been watching Hong Kong from the sidelines because the full marathon felt out of reach, the 5km Harbourfront Run changes the calculus. If you are an experienced runner who has missed the ballot before, the expanded half marathon quota gives you a better shot this year. And if you are planning your first international race from India, the visa-free access, short flights and USD 90 entry fee still make Hong Kong the most straightforward option on the continent.
