Neither winner led at the halfway mark. That’s the story of Columbus 2026 in one line — a marathon that reshuffled its leaderboard every few miles and rewarded the runners who held back long enough to strike.

Men’s Race: Nick Doud Comes From Nowhere After 20 Miles

Keegan Freyhof set the tone early, clearing 5K in 15:37 and leading through 15K in 47:56. It looked like his race to lose. By the halfway mark, though, John Tatter and Tobias Jones had absorbed him, both clicking through 13.1 miles in exactly 1:07:37. Three runners, one time, and 13 miles left to sort it out.

Then Nick Doud did something quietly extraordinary. He ran through the field in the second half, hitting the 20-mile checkpoint first in 1:43:57 with Tatter just a second behind. From there, Doud kept pressing while the rest faded. He crossed the line in 2:15:08, with Tatter second in 2:15:17 and Jones third in 2:17:58. Fifty-two seconds separated first from fifth. It was that kind of race.

Women’s Race: Ashton Swinford Runs the Back Half That Mattered

Elizabeth Vaughn led the women through the first half of the race, looking controlled and comfortable. Her sister Mary Kate Vaughn actually moved ahead at the 13.1-mile point, crossing in 1:18:27 with Elizabeth seven seconds back. That’s a tight, tactical front pack.

But Ashton Swinford, who had been sitting patiently in the mix, cleared 20 miles first in 2:00:52 and refused to look back. The 36-year-old finished in 2:38:04 — the kind of time that comes from actually racing the back half rather than just surviving it. Regina Rose ran a strong second in 2:41:40, and Elizabeth Vaughn took third in 2:43:42. Mary Kate Vaughn, despite leading at the halfway point, finished fourth in 2:45:58.
