Hi, I’m Anurag Rana — the guy who went from overweight and out-of-breath to finishing marathons in Delhi’s 40°C+ heat, Chandigarh traffic and Ladakh’s 11,000+ ft altitude. This site exists because I wish someone had told me back then: your shape doesn’t define what you can run.
For the last 11+ years (since registering fatmarathoner.com in 2015, I’ve poured everything into this blog: daily training logs, gear failures, injury recoveries, and honest wins. Fat Marathoner isn’t about elite times or sponsored perfection — it’s proof that everyday Indians (with jobs, families, pollution, and budget limits) can chase long runs and feel stronger doing it.
My Running Journey: From “I Can’t” to Multiple Marathons
I started running in my early 30s when I was dealing with low energy, self-doubt, and the belief that “marathons are for thin people.” Delhi’s smog, heat, and chaotic roads made every step harder.

- First shaky 1 km around my neighborhood — gasping, but I kept going.
- Gradual build: 5K, 10K, half-marathons.
- Key milestones:
- Completed multiple editions of the Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon (fighting pollution alerts and heat).
- Ran full and half distances in Chandigarh (smoother roads, but still real-world Indian conditions).
- Conquered the Ladakh Full Marathon (high altitude, thin air, extreme challenge — one of the toughest proofs that persistence beats starting fitness).
- Regular long runs in Delhi’s extremes — training through AQI 400+, humid monsoons, and water-scarce summers.
These aren’t just races; they’re the experiences that shaped every piece of advice on this site. I’ve tested budget shoes until they fell apart in potholes, adjusted hydration for Indian electrolytes, and learned injury prevention the hard way so you don’t have to.
What Fat Marathoner Delivers (And Why)
- Gear Reviews — Tested personally in Indian heat/pollution (no lab fluff — does it survive Delhi roads?).
- Training Advice — Realistic plans for beginners/overweight runners: slow builds, recovery focus, no “run 100 km/week or fail” extremes.
- India & UAE/Middle East Marathon Calendars — Updated obsessively with dates, registrations, visa tips for Indians traveling to Dubai/Abu Dhabi races.
- Inspiration for Everyone — Stories showing running transforms bodies and minds, regardless of pace or physique.
I’ve been recognized as one of the Top 5 Fitness Bloggers in India by Mumbai Live and among the Top 15 Health & Fitness Creators by Blogmint. I’ve contributed to platforms like Aditya Birla Health, but the real authority comes from 11+ years of showing up — writing, running, and replying to every reader email/DM.
Why Trust Me?
I’m not a certified coach or pro athlete. I’m you, a Delhi-based runner who’s lived the struggle, the progress, and the joy. Everything here is from real experience: what worked (and what bombed) in Indian conditions. I always say: consult a doctor for health issues, and run your own race.
