Who Is Andreas Almgren? The 2026 NYC Marathon Champion You Need to Know

Last Updated:

He watched the New York City Marathon in 2025. Went home. Started training for it in secret. Then came back twelve months later and won it on his first attempt, in 2:06:01, beating a field of men who had each run dozens of marathons between them. Andreas Almgren is the 2026 NYC Marathon champion and, until Sunday, most of the running world had not the faintest idea who he was. A 31-year-old Swede who two years ago was still working part-time as a data scientist. Who coaches himself. Who spent a year building toward this in silence.

This is everything you need to know about him.

Andreas Almgren: At a Glance

Before Running, Almgren Played for AIK Stockholm

Before he ever pulled on a pair of racing spikes, Almgren was a youth footballer at AIK Stockholm, one of Sweden’s most prominent clubs. He played at the back, on the wing, and by his own account took it seriously into his mid-teens. It was injuries, not a lack of talent, that pushed him out of the game. A body that kept breaking down in football eventually found its way onto the track, and there the same body became one of the fastest in European distance running history.

He quit football at 18. Within two years he was on a world junior podium.

He Won a World Junior Medal at 800m in 2014

The man who just won the New York City Marathon on his debut started his international career over two laps of a track. At the 2014 World U20 Championships in Eugene, Oregon, Almgren took bronze in the 800m in 1:45.65. The following winter he finished fourth at the European Indoor Championships in Prague. He went to the senior World Championships in Beijing in 2015 and ran a personal best of 1:45.59 that still stands.

That is the same Andreas Almgren who finished Central Park last Sunday in a time that only three men in the history of the New York City Marathon have beaten, according to Swedish newspaper Expressen.

Years of Stress Fractures Nearly Ended His Career

The stretch between his junior breakthrough and his first major senior title covers almost a decade, and much of it was spent in medical boots rather than racing flats. Multiple stress fractures as he tried to hold his 800m career together. A broken navicular bone in his foot. And in 2019 a stress fracture in his sacrum, one of the more serious structural injuries a distance runner can face.

He also finished fourth at the European Championships three separate times: 5,000m in 2022, 10,000m in 2024 and the indoor 3,000m in 2025. Each time, a medal had been within reach. The 2024 one stung particularly. He had run 26:52.87 for 10,000m in California in March of that year, a Swedish record and the fastest 10,000m ever run by a European-born athlete. Then he arrived in Rome for the European Championships and finished fourth again.

He missed the Paris 2024 Olympics with a shin stress reaction, announced the day before his 5,000m heat. At that point you could forgive anyone for wondering if the championships would ever fall his way.

The sacral injury in 2019 did change one thing. It pushed him toward the Norwegian double-threshold training method: two controlled sessions at threshold pace in a single day, built around a massive aerobic base rather than intense speed work. He adopted it partly under the influence of fellow Swede Kalle Berglund, who used the same approach to reach the 1,500m final at the 2019 World Championships in Doha. “I ran a national record in my first race back and I was like: okay, this works for me,” Almgren told Athletics Weekly.

He Was a Data Scientist While Competing at Elite Level

Here is the detail that consistently stops people. While Almgren was setting European records and racing at Diamond League meets, he was simultaneously working part-time as a data scientist at Svexa, a Swedish sports technology company. He has reportedly studied for a master’s degree in mathematics, according to LetsRun.

Nike’s Jordan Donnelly, who moved from On to become Nike’s head of running innovation, got involved with Almgren’s preparation around this period. What Donnelly found was an athlete running an essentially self-managed performance programme around the edges of a day job. “We mapped out his life, essentially,” Donnelly told LetsRun. The changes were structural: more sleep, better altitude camp timing, heat training integrated into the calendar.

Almgren quit Svexa in 2025 to run full-time. The results that followed were not a coincidence. He won his first Diamond League race in Stockholm in June 2025 in a European 5,000m record of 12:44.27. He took 10,000m bronze at the World Championships in Tokyo. He set a European half marathon record of 58:41 in Valencia, the first time any European man had broken 59 minutes. Then in 2026 he won the European 10,000m title by 19 seconds in Birmingham and the world half marathon title in Copenhagen by five seconds in 58:06.

How Does Andreas Almgren Train?

“I would say he’s 99% self-coached,” Donnelly told LetsRun. Almgren writes his own workouts, designs his training blocks and builds his own periodisation. Urban Aruhn is a mentor rather than a director. Donnelly’s team handles nutrition strategy, heat acclimatisation and marginal-gains work. But the architecture of the training itself comes from the athlete.

The double-threshold structure runs through everything. Tuesdays and Thursdays are still double-threshold days: two sessions in one day, both at controlled aerobic threshold effort, without pushing into the anaerobic zones that accumulate fatigue faster than the body can clear it. Whether zone 2 running plays a formal role in his periodisation has not been publicly confirmed, but the philosophy of the double-threshold model shares significant overlap with zone 2 thinking: build the aerobic engine relentlessly before adding intensity. At 12 x 1km intervals at aerobic threshold pace, he told Athletics Weekly, “you just get into a good flow when you feel you’re fast and strong.”

His usual weekly volume sits at around 200 kilometres.

Why Did Andreas Almgren Choose NYC for His Marathon Debut?

This was not a random choice. He decided on New York in November 2025, right after watching the race, and the decision was based on a clear read of what the course and format demand from an athlete with his profile.

Faster courses like Berlin, Chicago and Valencia use pacemakers and tend to produce strung-out fields from early in the race, turning them into time trials rather than tactical contests. New York has run without pacemakers since 2007. The course crosses five bridges, climbs repeatedly and finishes with a long grind up Fifth Avenue into Central Park. “There are no pacers or anything, it’s just a race,” he told Runner’s World Sweden (translated from Swedish). “It fits me coming from the track that New York is usually quite slow the first half and then it’s progressively faster. In road races, I’m a good kicker.”

He also prepared specifically for the hills. “For New York, it’s quite a lot of hills and a lot of people don’t really condition themselves for downhill running,” he said to The Athletic in October. “I’ve done a lot of extra work for my quads and eccentric strength. If you’re not prepared and strong enough, your stride is going to collapse mechanically.” Our complete NYC Marathon course guide breaks down exactly the terrain he was talking about, borough by borough.

The Marathon Build: A Year of Secret Training

He kept the plan quiet from the moment he made it. “I just had to keep the secret, which was a bit of a pain,” he said, in a translation of an Expressen report published on race morning.

The numbers that eventually emerged were significant. He raised his usual weekly volume from around 200 kilometres to a peak of 235km. He ran 40-kilometre long runs three times, at proper training effort rather than a jog. He put together single days of 46km across two sessions. He spent months specifically training his gut to absorb around 120 grams of carbohydrate per hour on long runs, close to the upper limit of what current sports nutrition research supports for elite marathon racing.

Conner Mantz, the American marathon record holder, spent time training with Almgren in Sweden during the build and admitted being impressed by the volume and by how effortlessly Almgren seemed to manage it. This was Almgren’s ninth altitude camp at Flagstaff, Arizona, which serves as Nike’s running hub. He went straight there from Copenhagen after winning the world half marathon title in September.

“I’m going in with this childlike naivety that I’m going to win,” he said before the race. “Why not me?”

What Shoes Did Andreas Almgren Wear at the 2026 NYC Marathon?

Almgren is a Nike athlete and reportedly wore the Nike Apex in New York. The Apex was publicly announced by Nike on September 30, 2026, only five weeks before race day, though Nike athletes had been racing in prototype versions before then. Jacob Kiplimo wore a prototype when he broke the half marathon world record in Lisbon. If confirmed, Almgren winning a marathon debut in the Apex would be a meaningful early performance data point for the shoe, which Nike claims delivers up to 40% more energy return than the Alphafly 3 at over 10% less weight. We will update this when Nike or Almgren confirms the specific race-day shoe.

How Almgren Actually Ran the NYC Race

The full 2026 NYC Marathon results and race report are covered separately. The short version: Almgren sat in the lead pack for most of it, exactly as planned. At 35 kilometres there were still around 15 men together. Benson Kipruto threw in a 4:38 mile to break the group. By 40 kilometres it was Kipruto, Almgren and Italy’s Yemaneberhan Crippa.

With just over half a mile to go Almgren pulled away. He had enough space coming down the finishing stretch to acknowledge the crowd. His final mile was approximately 4:30 pace, per Yahoo Sports. On a course he had never raced before. In his first marathon. After 40 kilometres already on his legs.

He won by 13 seconds over Crippa. Kamohelo Mofolo of Lesotho, who turned 21 on race day, finished third. Kipruto was fourth.

Historic result for European running: Almgren is the first Swede to win any World Marathon Major and the first European-born man to win New York since 1996, according to multiple reports including NBC Sports and LetsRun. His 2:06:01 is reportedly the fourth-fastest winning time in the race’s history, per Swedish newspaper Expressen.

What Is Andreas Almgren’s Next Race?

He is not switching to the marathon full-time. Not yet. His primary stated goal is the 10,000m at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, which would be his first Games after missing Paris. He has said there is a possibility he could double up and run the marathon in LA as well, something Galen Rupp managed at the 2016 Rio Olympics. “I’d say it’s 95 per cent the 10,000m. But I haven’t written off anything,” he told Swedish news agency TT.

After LA, he plans to commit to the roads and the marathon full-time. The Swedish marathon record, 2:05:57 set by Suldan Hassan, will be the obvious first target. Running 2:06 on a debut in New York suggests that record is not going to last long once he turns his attention to a flat, fast course with pacemakers.

FatMarathoner Take

Almgren is one of the most analytically interesting athletes in long-distance running right now. A mathematician. A former data scientist. A 99%-self-coached runner who identified exactly which race suited his profile, trained for it in silence for a year, and then executed the plan with the calm of someone who had run fifty marathons before. He had not run one. That is the part nobody quite has an explanation for yet. The Nike Apex shoe story, when confirmed, will add another layer: a debut marathon win in a shoe announced five weeks before race day. However the next chapter at LA 2028 unfolds, Sunday was a result that reshaped what we think European distance running is capable of. The ceiling just moved.
