A 24-year-old Ethiopian whose pre-race marathon best sat around 2:08 walked into Frankfurt on Sunday and ran 2:05:26. Amanal Petros, the European champion, German record holder, and the runner everyone had pencilled in as the day’s story, finished 20 seconds behind him.
Jirata Denki’s win at the 43rd Mainova Frankfurt Marathon was the biggest men’s surprise of the autumn marathon calendar. In the women’s race, Ethiopian Zeineba Yimer crossed first in 2:19:45. But the performance Frankfurt will be talking about longest was the German who came in behind her: a 24-year-old on her first marathon, running 2:20:46 and finishing second.
Frankfurt Marathon 2026 Men’s Results: Denki Upsets the Field
The men’s start list was the strongest in the race’s history. For the first time, four runners with sub-2:05 personal bests stood on the line together. Race director Jo Schindler, in his 25th year running Frankfurt, had built around the home contenders: Petros with his 2:04:03 German record, Samuel Fitwi with 2:04:45 and Richard Ringer with 2:04:47. Ethiopia’s Andualem Belay, carrying 2:04:44, was the danger from abroad on paper.
Denki was not the danger anyone had circled. By the finish, he had run nearly three minutes faster than his previous best. Petros, running for Hannover 96, came home second in 2:05:46. It is a respectable time on a hard day. The margin is what it is. Kenya’s Benard Biwott, also born in 2002, took third in 2:06:23. Israel’s Haimro Alame ran fourth in 2:06:58, just outside his 2:06:04 personal best. Richard Ringer gave Germany a second finisher in the top five, running for LC Rehlingen in 2:07:07.

Blanka Dörfel’s Frankfurt Debut Is the Women’s Performance of the Season
Zeineba Yimer won the women’s race as expected. The 28-year-old Ethiopian, whose World Athletics personal best stands at 2:18:47 from March this year, handled the pace and crossed first in 2:19:45. That is the headline. The story sits 61 seconds behind her.
Blanka Dörfel finished second in 2:20:46. It was her first marathon. She runs for Berlin Athletics Capital Club and had been confirmed as a debutante ahead of the race. What she did with that debut, on a World Athletics Elite Label course, against an elite field, is one of the better German women’s marathon performances in recent memory.
Name to remember: Blanka Dörfel, born 2002, ran 2:20:46 on her marathon debut at Frankfurt 2026, finishing second and 61 seconds behind the winner. She has announced herself immediately at the top end of the European women’s marathon scene. There will be more from her.
Third on the women’s side was Beriha Gebreyohanes of Ethiopia, born in 2006, in 2:22:46. She is 20. Fourth went to Aselef Kassie, also Ethiopian, born in 2007, in 2:25:31. A 19-year-old finishing fourth at a race of this level is not a footnote. Siranesh Dagne rounded out the top five in 2:26:05.

What Frankfurt 2026 Says About Marathon Running Right Now
Schindler’s 43rd edition delivered the fast, competitive race it promised. The men’s top five ran between 2:05 and 2:07. The women’s top two were separated by just over a minute. The course worked. The field held its quality.
But the result that will carry through the season belongs to an Ethiopian 24-year-old who was not in any pre-race conversation. Denki, Biwott on the men’s side and Gebreyohanes and Kassie among the women are all born in 2002 or later. The marathon’s next generation was supposed to be arriving. On the Festhalle red carpet on Sunday, it was already here.
If you are running Frankfurt or thinking about it, our Mainova Frankfurt Marathon guide covers the course, registration, logistics and what to plan for on race day.
Verdict: Frankfurt 2026 gave the marathon world two results to follow: Jirata Denki’s improbable win over a stacked men’s field and Blanka Dörfel’s extraordinary debut. Petros will be back. Dörfel is just getting started. Denki has just written his own name into the conversation for good.
