Eight thousand and nineteen runners qualified for the 2027 Boston Marathon. The B.A.A. told all of them no.
That number is the sharpest way to understand what Boston registration actually means in 2026. Having a BQ is not the achievement it once was — getting to the start line is. The Boston Athletic Association confirmed on September 29 that the cutoff for the 131st Boston Marathon is 5 minutes, 17 seconds (5:17) under the age group standard. A record 25,630 qualifiers have been accepted into the April 19, 2027 race. The 8,019 who missed out all ran legitimate qualifying times. They just were not fast enough.

2027 Boston Marathon Cutoff Confirmed at 5:17 Under Standard
The cutoff shifts year to year based on how many people apply and how fast they ran. In 2025 it hit 6:51 — the most punishing number in recent memory. Last year it eased to 4:34. This year’s 5:17 sits right between the two and confirms a structural reality: the published standard is not the bar. The cutoff is.
In concrete terms: a man aged 18-34 who ran exactly 2:55:00 — the official qualifying standard — was rejected. To get in on cutoff alone he needed to run faster than 2:49:43. For women in that bracket, 3:25:00 flat was not enough. You needed to be under 3:19:43.
| Year | Cutoff Under Standard | Applications | Rejected |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2027 | 5:17 — Confirmed | 33,649 | 8,019 |
| 2026 | 4:34 | 33,249 | 8,887 |
| 2025 | 6:51 | — | 12,324 |
| 2024 | 5:29 | — | 11,039 |
| 2023 | No cutoff | — | 0 |
| 2022 | No cutoff | — | 0 |
| 2021 | 7:47 | — | 9,215 |
The rejection count is actually lower than 2026 despite a tighter cutoff. The reason is the new Boston Qualifier Selection draw.
How the Boston Qualifier Selection Lottery Worked in 2027
The B.A.A. introduced a random draw for 1,000 additional places, open to applicants who beat their qualifying standard but missed the 5:17 cutoff. Without it, 9,019 runners would have been rejected — slightly more than last year. The lottery brought the final count down to 8,019. Odds for those in the draw were roughly one in nine.
The B.A.A. added the Qualifier Selection in July 2026, framing it as recognition for runners who trained hard enough to beat the standard but were edged out by the cutoff. In practice it works as a pressure valve. As applications keep growing year on year, the draw absorbs some of the overflow without expanding the field beyond the 30,000 cap that Hopkinton’s start area imposes.
For the roughly 9,000 runners in the draw pool this year, the odds worked out to about 1-in-9. Those who missed out are now in the 2028 qualifying window, which opened on September 19.
Who Got Into the 2027 Boston Marathon Field
The accepted qualifier field spans 120 countries, all 50 US states plus Washington DC and US territories, and an age range from 18 to 84. Nearly 11,000 of them have never run Boston before.
| Category | Number |
|---|---|
| Men accepted | 13,898 |
| Women accepted | 10,641 |
| Non-binary athletes accepted | 91 |
| Countries represented | 120 |
| First-time Boston runners | ~10,745 |
| Para Athletics Division qualifiers | 215 |
| Accepted via 10+ consecutive Bostons or B.A.A. Running Club | 849 |
| Youngest accepted athlete | 18 |
| Oldest accepted athlete | 84 |
The top feeder races tell a familiar story. Boston runners qualify at Boston. The 2026 race sent nearly 4,500 runners straight back to Hopkinton for 2027 — more than double the second-biggest feeder.
| Qualifying Race | Entrants to Boston 2027 |
|---|---|
| 2026 Boston Marathon | 4,448 |
| 2025 Bank of America Chicago Marathon | 2,043 |
| 2025 TCS New York City Marathon | 826 |
| 2025 California International Marathon | 812 |
| 2026 TCS London Marathon | 610 |
What the 5:17 Cutoff Means If You Are Targeting Boston 2028
The 2028 qualifying window opened on September 19, 2026 — one day after 2027 registration closed. Any certified marathon you run from that date counts toward your 2028 BQ. The qualifying standards are unchanged.
The cutoff has exceeded five minutes in three of the last four competitive registration years. Do not train to the published standard — train to beat it by at least 6 to 7 minutes. Landing between 5:00 and 6:00 under puts you in lottery territory: possible through the Qualifier Selection draw but far from guaranteed. Eight minutes under is a comfortable margin. That is your real target for 2028.
B.A.A. president and CEO Jack Fleming acknowledged the growing demand in the announcement, noting that “the number of marathoners world-wide only continues to grow” and that the organisation wants to recognise every athlete who trains for and aspires to run Boston — including those who do not make the field.

A 5:17 cutoff with 8,019 valid BQ holders turned away makes this the most competitive Boston registration outside of the post-COVID 2021 cycle. If you are building toward a 2028 BQ, the message is straightforward: the published standard is a floor, not a finish line. Run well under it or plan to rely on a lottery with one-in-nine odds. The Qualifier Selection draw is a welcome addition to the system. It is not a training strategy.
