Three years in, the Tawang Marathon has a new face. When a race gets a full identity refresh — new logo, new mascot, a redesigned finisher medal and a new race jersey — it is not routine event housekeeping. It means the people running it have decided the original version was a proof of concept, and this is the actual thing.
On September 28, Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu unveiled the complete new brand identity for the 4th edition of the Tawang Marathon at an official launch held at his office in Itanagar. The official website and registration platform were opened at the same event. The race runs on October 24, 2026, at the Gyalwa Tsangyang Gyatso High Altitude Stadium in Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh, at roughly 10,000 feet above sea level.
What Was Unveiled at the Tawang Marathon 4th Edition Launch
Four new identity elements were presented. Khandu gave each a specific meaning, and it is worth noting what those meanings are — they show how deliberately the organisers are framing this race’s story:

What Pema Khandu Said About the Race’s Purpose
At the launch, Khandu returned to what he described as the original brief behind the event. The race, he said, was conceived as a platform where sport meets the Himalayan landscape and where Arunachal Pradesh’s story of responsible tourism reaches a global audience — not merely as a competition.
That framing matters. The Tawang Marathon is being built as a cultural and tourism vehicle as much as a sporting event. The new identity refresh is part of formalising that positioning as the race heads into its 4th edition. Khandu extended a direct invitation to runners, sports enthusiasts and travellers from India and abroad to come and experience Tawang through the race.
The event is jointly organised by the Government of Arunachal Pradesh and the Indian Army — a co-organising structure that is not ceremonial. The Army handles a significant portion of the race logistics and aid station infrastructure in what is a remote, high-altitude border town. That partnership is core to what makes an event of this scale possible here.
Tawang Marathon by the Numbers: Three Years of Rapid Growth
The trajectory tells its own story. The inaugural edition in October 2023 drew 2,463 participants — a solid number given that reaching the start line requires flying to Guwahati and spending two days on mountain roads. The 2024 edition grew to 4,580 runners from 27 states. By 2025, over 6,200 participants crossed the start line. Ethiopian runners swept the full marathon podium in 2024. Kenyan athletes made the journey in 2025. The Tawang Marathon went from a northeast India novelty to one of the most internationally recognised high-altitude road races in South Asia in three editions.
The 4th edition is expected to draw over 4,000 participants, with more than 200 elite runners from India, Kenya, Ethiopia and Nepal registered. The ₹65 lakh prize pool — covering all four distances and multiple age categories — has been enough to pull serious international competitive fields to a race at 10,000 feet in Arunachal Pradesh. That says something about what this event has become.
Tawang Marathon 2026 Registration — Open Now, Four Weeks Out
Registration is live at register.tawangmarathon.com. With race day on October 24 less than four weeks away, the more pressing constraint is accommodation. Tawang has a small room inventory and race weekend has sold out well in advance in every previous edition. If you are considering entering, the place to sort first is where you are sleeping, not the race form.
Full and half marathon runners are also advised to arrive in Tawang at least 7 days before race day for acclimatisation. That timeline is not optional at 3,050 m.
