Delhi’s biggest running event just named its most counterintuitive ambassador yet. A woman who races 400 metres in under 49 seconds — less than a single lap of a track — is now the public face of a 21-kilometre road race through the streets of the capital. And it makes complete sense.
Procam International announced on Thursday that Shaunae Miller-Uibo, the double Olympic 400m champion from the Bahamas, is the International Event Ambassador for the Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon 2026. The race is on October 18 at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. That is 24 days away.
Procam do not pick their VDHM ambassadors at random. Daley Thompson, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Cathy Freeman, David Rudisha, Ashton Eaton — every name on that list earned its place. Miller-Uibo fits the company, but she brings something the list has not had before: a comeback story that is still being written right now, in real time.
Why Shaunae Miller-Uibo Was Named Delhi Half Marathon 2026 Ambassador
By any measure, Miller-Uibo’s credentials are exceptional. She won Olympic gold at Rio 2016 and repeated in Tokyo 2021, both in the 400m. She then took the World Championship title in Eugene in 2022, becoming the only women’s 400m athlete in history to collect every major title the event has: World Youth, World Junior, two Olympic golds and the World Championship. That is a complete set. Nobody else has done it.
Then her career stalled. Injuries. Two pregnancies. By 2024, most of the athletics conversation around Miller-Uibo had shifted to what she had been. On December 31, 2025, she posted on Instagram: “Grateful for what 2025 taught me. Ready to show up again in 2026 — with humility, hunger, and heart.”
She backed it up. Now 32, competing primarily in the 200m after stepping back from the 400m, she ran a season’s best of 22.04 seconds in Xiamen in May, ranking seventh in the world at that point. She won the Zagreb Continental Tour Gold. She finished third at the London Diamond League in 22.24 seconds, qualifying for the Brussels final. For someone who had just come back from back-to-back births and a cycle of injuries, that is not a quiet return. That is form.
What makes her a natural fit for a mass participation race has nothing to do with distance. It is the gap between where she was and where she is now. Miller-Uibo has spoken about community and giving back throughout her career. After winning the World title in 2022, she went home to Nassau and hosted a neighbourhood fun run in the community where she grew up. She does not need to have run a half marathon to inspire people who have. She needs to understand the cost of starting over. She clearly does.

The 2026 edition marks the race stepping into its third decade. Last year drew 39,513 participants including 9,709 women, the highest post-COVID turnout the event has seen. It raised Rs 4.12 crore for charitable causes and generated a socio-economic and health impact of Rs 433.88 crore across the city. VDHM has also processed 6,361 kg of waste, avoided 23,011 kg of greenhouse gas emissions and delivered a 100 per cent waste-managed event in 2025.
Race day logistics: All registered participants get free Delhi Metro travel on October 18. PUMA provides official race-day tees for Half Marathon and Open 10K runners. Finisher medals are made using zinc sourced from Hindustan Zinc’s Zawar Mines in Rajasthan.
VDHM 2026 Elite Field: Who Is Running on October 18?
Procam announced the international elite field on September 8: 36 athletes, 18 men and 18 women. The men’s race has eight runners with sub-60-minute personal bests. That sets up a genuine course record attempt if conditions cooperate. Delhi in mid-October is warm, but an early morning start typically gives runners a usable window before the heat takes hold.
| Athlete | Country | PB | The Case For Them |
|---|---|---|---|
| Birhanu Legese | Ethiopia | 58:59 | Two-time VDHM champion. Fastest PB in the men’s field. Narrowly missed the podium last year and is openly motivated to fix that. |
| Peter Tuitoek | Kenya | 59:05 | Second fastest PB in the men’s draw. Has the quality to race Legese to the line. |
| Charles Matata | Kenya | 59:15 | 2023 VDHM runner-up. Finished second at the Istanbul Half Marathon earlier this year. Comfortable at this level. |
| Melaku Belachew | Ethiopia | 1:01:19 | Won the 2026 Hong Kong Marathon. Arrives in form over the longer distance. |
| Irine Cheptai | Kenya | 1:04:53 | 2022 VDHM winner. Leads the women’s field. Won the Burj2Burj Half Marathon in Dubai in February. |
| Lonah Chemtai Salpeter | Israel | 1:06:09 | 2022 World Athletics HM bronze medallist. Has the experience and finishing speed to be dangerous. |
| Cynthia Limo | Kenya | 1:06:04 | 2024 VDHM runner-up. Consistent performer at this standard. |
| Melal Siyoum Biratu | Ethiopia | 1:07:21 | Last year’s silver medallist. Knows the course. Knows what it takes to finish on the podium here. |
Legese is the headline on the men’s side. He has won here twice and spoken about his hunger to take a third title after last year’s near-miss. Cheptai is the pick in the women’s race, though Salpeter is the kind of athlete who quietly sits in the lead pack until she is not. The women’s podium could go several ways.
What This Ambassador Pick Says About Indian Running in 2026
In the VDHM’s early years, Procam leaned on cricket and rugby legends to pull mainstream attention toward a running event that was still earning its credibility. By the time they got to Freeman, Rudisha and Eaton, the event did not need that anymore. It had the Gold Label, the prize money and the numbers to speak for itself.
Miller-Uibo in 2026 is a different kind of signal. She is not retired. She is not here as a living trophy. She is an active Diamond League competitor mid-comeback, and Procam have put her in front of 40,000 runners as their figurehead. That says something about the confidence the VDHM now has in its own stature. You do not need a museum piece when you are already one of Asia’s most significant road races.
It also says something about the story the event wants to tell. Miller-Uibo coming back from injury and two pregnancies at 32 maps directly onto the experience of the recreational runner who is here after a knee op, a tough year or just a long time away from sport. That is a deliberate choice. It is a good one.
FatMarathoner Verdict
A sprint champion fronting a distance race looks like a headline mismatch. It is not. Miller-Uibo’s 2026 return is one of the more compelling stories in track right now, and her presence gives the VDHM a platform that stretches well beyond running media. The race itself has the field to match the occasion: Legese going for three, Cheptai defending her Delhi reputation and a women’s draw with at least four genuine podium threats. If you are running Delhi on October 18, this is shaping up to be a memorable edition to be part of.
