There are marathons you run, and then there are marathons that stay with you. The adidas Stockholm Marathon is very much the second kind. You start on a wide boulevard outside one of the world’s most decorated athletics stadiums, run through a city built on 14 islands, pass the Royal Palace three times, cross the Västerbron bridge with a panorama that’ll stop your brain mid-race and finish inside a 1912 Olympic arena where 83 world records in athletics have been set. No other venue on earth comes close to that number. Your finish line is genuinely historic.
The 2027 edition will be the 48th time Stockholm has thrown open its streets for this race. It is not a fast course by design — there are real climbs, cobbled sections and some technical turns through Gamla Stan’s medieval lanes — but it rewards experience and smart pacing in a way that flat road races rarely do. The crowd support is exceptional from start to finish, with DJ stations, live music and hundreds of thousands of spectators lining a route that doubles back enough times to let your supporters cheer you at multiple spots. Runners from more than 90 countries typically turn up, and the atmosphere has the internationalism of a major without the corporate coldness.
The 2026 course brought meaningful updates: Gamla Stan is now circled on both passes, a new stretch cuts through SoFo (Södermalm’s trendiest neighbourhood), and Norr Mälarstrand along Kungsholmen gets a longer crowd-friendly section that runners genuinely love. The harder sections — Katarinavägen, Hornsgatan/Lundagatan and Västerbron — now arrive earlier in the race, which is actually better for most runners. You get the climbing done while you’re still relatively fresh. The 2027 course is expected to follow the same layout.
Who should run it? Anyone who wants to combine a genuine marathon challenge with one of Europe’s best long-weekend city breaks. Destination runners, Scandinavian running fans, anyone chasing their first international marathon and, frankly, any runner who has only done flat urban racetracks and wants to experience what it feels like when a city actually goes all-in on its marathon. Stockholm does.

What Makes the adidas Stockholm Marathon Worth Running?
The Most Historic Finish Line in Marathon Running
You do not just finish inside a stadium. You finish inside the stadium — the 1912 Olympic arena that holds 83 officially recognised world records in athletics, more than any other venue on the planet. Built of red brick with twin towers and an open wooden grandstand, it has a warmth that modern concrete bowls never manage. When you come down that final straight and hear the roar echoing off those old walls, it is genuinely something else. Many runners report it as an emotional peak they were not expecting.
A City That Actually Opens Up for Its Marathon
Stockholm does not grudgingly accommodate runners for a few hours. The city closes major arterial roads, lines the route with hundreds of thousands of spectators and fills the course with DJ stations, live music acts and sponsor activations across all 42 kilometres. The four nations with the most runners get their own dedicated DJ station — Sweden, the UK, Finland and Germany had their own music stages in 2026. The crowd energy from Gamla Stan to SoFo to the Kungsholmen waterfront is exceptional. You are never alone on this course.
Seven Districts, One Lap, Maximum Variety
Stockholm is the rare city where a marathon course can genuinely not repeat itself in terms of scenery and feel. You go from the manicured boulevards of Östermalm to the royal parkland of Djurgården to the cobbled waterfront of Gamla Stan to the gritty cool of Södermalm to the renovated waterfront of Kungsholmen to the urban buzz of Norrmalm — and back. The section through SoFo (new in 2026) takes you past 30-odd restaurants and hip locals in one 1.5-kilometre stretch. Djurgårdsvägen through the royal park is quiet and green. No two kilometres of this course feel the same.
Late-Spring Timing and Scandinavian Long Days
Late May in Stockholm is a sweet spot. Temperatures average 14-16°C at race time (historically around 11-18°C at the noon start), daylight extends to nearly 17 hours and the city is in full spring bloom. The noon start means you wake up, eat your hotel breakfast, do a proper warm-up and still have time to sort your kit without the pre-dawn alarm that ruins most marathon mornings. The light is gorgeous for photos and the city is at its absolute best. Spectators are outdoors, cafes spill onto the streets and the whole race has a festival quality.
The Weekend Package Is Genuinely Good
Stockholm Marathon is a race event, not just a race. The adidas Shake Out Run the evening before (5km from and to the stadium, with real atmosphere) is a brilliant way to loosen up and soak in the buzz. The ZETA Pasta Party on Friday at the stadium itself is a proper event. The Expo at Östermalms IP is open to the public and runs over three days. The official race app does live GPS tracking. The post-finish area at Östermalms IP has massage, food trucks, showers and space to breathe. These details matter after six hours on your feet.
The Abbott World Marathon Majors Qualifier
Stockholm serves as an official qualifier for the Abbott World Marathon Majors. If you are building your Six Star record or chasing a qualifying time for another major, this race counts. The World Athletics Label also means the course is independently certified, timing is accurate and elite standards are properly enforced. It is taken seriously as a competitive race, not just a tourism product with a bib attached.

Kilometres 1–10: Östermalm and the First Loop
The race starts wide and fast on Lidingövägen outside the stadium, which is your finish line — try not to be tempted to stop when you pass it. You turn onto Valhallavägen and head downhill along Odengatan to Sveavägen, cutting through the heart of the city past the Grand cinema and Hötorget toward Stockholm Central Station. The pace feels very easy here, partly because of the slight descent and partly because you are on fresh legs in a crowd of thousands. Resist the temptation to go out hard. You turn up through Gamla Stan along the waterfront — Munkbron to Skeppsbron, past the Royal Palace — then back out through Kungsträdgården to Strandvägen and the elegant boulevard of Narvavägen. The Narvavägen climb at km 9 is roughly 600 metres at a 2-3% gradient. It does not feel steep but it will catch you if you have gone out too fast. You return to Östermalms IP and Stockholm Stadium at km 10, having covered all the city’s main avenues and waterways once over.
Kilometres 11–18: Östermalm Again, Then Djurgårdsbrunn to Skansen
The original opening stretch of the course covers Valhallavägen and Oxenstiernsgatan (a short uphill toward the Swedish Radio buildings) before dropping steeply toward Berwaldhallen and down through Diplomatstaden to the waterfront. Gärdet opens up on your left — this section can be exposed to headwinds — and you follow the Djurgårdsbrunn Canal toward the bridge. The climb into Djurgården on Djurgårdsvägen is a steady 3% gradient up to Manilla. Once over the crest, you get the longest uninterrupted flat stretch of the race through the royal parkland, passing Skansen at km 18. This is a beautiful section, quiet and tree-lined, and many runners find it the easiest part of the race mentally. Use it to reset your breathing, drink properly and bank some relaxed kilometres.
Kilometres 19–29: Waterfront Back Through Gamla Stan, Then the Climbs Begin
You leave Djurgården at km 19 and rejoin the wider field — some runners are at km 10 on their loop and you will overtake them on Strandvägen. The waterfront route through Nybroviken and past the Waxholm boat terminals to Slussen takes you past Gamla Stan for the second time, and then up Katarinavägen at km 22. This is the race’s signature challenge: a full kilometre of genuine climbing from Slussen, steepest at the bottom then gradually easing. Shorten your stride, let your heart rate settle and do not chase runners around you. The payoff is the entry into SoFo on Folkungagatan — one of Stockholm’s most vibrant streets, lined with restaurants, bars and an excellent crowd. You zigzag through central Södermalm via Katarina Bangata, past Skrapan and along Magnus Ladulåsgatan before turning onto Hornsgatan and Lundagatan for the next real climb at km 27. This hits the highest point of the course. There is a significant descent to Högalidsparken and then it is all about getting to Västerbron in reasonable shape. The bridge climb at km 28 is manageable if you are well paced — it arrives from a gentler angle now than in the old two-lap course. The views from the top are extraordinary: City Hall and Riddarholmen to the right, Långholmen and Lake Mälaren ahead. Let yourself look.
Kilometres 30–36: Kungsholmen — New Ground, Then Back to the City
Kungsholmen arrives at km 30 and it is the freshest part of the 2026-updated course. Two kilometres along Norr Mälarstrand to City Hall are crowd-friendly and relatively flat — a mental lifeline at this stage. Then the course turns up Hantverkargatan and climbs across Kungsholmen to the City Court, which is the last real elevation challenge of the race. Keep cadence high, take your time at the energy stations and tell yourself you are entering the final 10 kilometres. You leave Kungsholmen via Fleminggatan and St. Eriksbron, then drop downhill past Vasaparken and back toward Stockholm Central, retracing familiar ground from the first 10 kilometres. Central Station at km 35 then takes you back through the Gamla Stan waterfront for the third and final time.
Kilometres 37–42: The Final Push Back to Stadion
The last 7 kilometres retrace sections you covered in the opening loop — Skeppsbron past the Royal Palace, Kungsträdgården, Strandvägen and the Narvavägen climb. Yes, you climb Narvavägen again at km 40, roughly 600 metres at 2-3%. At this point in a marathon, a hill is a hill. But you know the top is followed by Karlaplan and a familiar downhill to Östermalms IP. From km 41, the route extends one extra block to Engelbrektsgatan before finally turning toward Stockholm Stadium. You enter the stadium from the top of the track, run down to the finish line at the bottom of the back straight and finish inside the arena to a full grandstand. The final 100 metres inside the stadium are worth every kilometre that came before them.
Race Strategy: How to Run Stockholm Smart
- Go out conservatively on the opening Östermalm loop (km 1-10). The slight downhill through Sveavägen to the city centre feels easy and you will be carried by adrenaline. Bank nothing yet. The back half demands patience you may not have if you burn matches early.
- Narvavägen (km 9 and again at km 40) is 600m at 2-3% gradient. On the first pass, just settle into an easy rhythm. On the second pass at km 40, remember you are less than 2km from the finish — hold form, shorten stride and use your arms.
- Katarinavägen at km 22 is the race’s biggest test. The Slussen climb is 1km, steepest at the start. Do not chase other runners uphill. Shorten your stride, keep cadence high and let your heart rate come back to you at the top before opening up through SoFo.
- The Hornsgatan/Lundagatan climb (km 27) is the highest point. Arrive here fuelled — energy station at Varvsgatan (km 26.9) is close by. The descent to Högalid comes quickly and your legs will thank you for not hammering the downhill.
- Västerbron (km 28) is now approached from the gentler Långholmsgatan angle. Still a real bridge climb but very runnable. Do not stop to take a photo — that is what finish-line selfies are for.
- Cut-off times are from gun start, not chip start. If you start in Wave 2 or Wave 3, subtract 8 or 16 minutes from clock times at checkpoint boards. Key cut-offs: Slussen (21.1km) by 15:35, Heleneborgsgatan (27km) by 16:25, Fleminggatan (32km) by 17:15, Vasagatan (35.5km) by 17:45.
- The 12:00 noon start means race-day heat. On warm years Stockholm can see temperatures of 18-22°C by mid-afternoon. Use every cooling shower station before hydration points, dip your cap and consider wearing light colours.
- The Kungsholmen section (km 30-32) is new ground — run it with confidence. The uphill to City Court is manageable and Norr Mälarstrand before it is one of the most beautiful sections of the course. This is where races are won and lost mentally.

Stockholm Marathon Weather — What to Expect in Late May
| Metric | Average (Late May, Stockholm) |
|---|---|
| Average high (race time) | 14–16°C (57–61°F) |
| Average low (morning) | 5–8°C (41–46°F) |
| Daylight hours | ~17 hours (sunrise ~03:45, sunset ~21:45) |
| Rainy days in May | 6–11 days; ~32–52mm total rainfall |
| Average wind speed | 3.3–4 m/s (light to moderate) |
| UV index | 3–5 (moderate — apply sunscreen) |
| Recorded extremes in May | Hottest May day: 28°C (2018) | Coldest: 3°C (1981) |
| 2026 race day actual | ~11–18°C, light SSW winds — near-ideal conditions |
Late May in Stockholm is genuinely good marathon weather in most years. The noon start means you miss the morning chill and instead race in mild, pleasant conditions — though if a warm front arrives the temperatures can push toward 20-22°C by early afternoon. The 2026 edition ran in near-perfect conditions; 2018 was unusually hot. Plan for a range. Bring a light throwaway top for the start-pen wait, use every cooling shower station along the course and do not forget sunscreen — the UV is higher than most runners expect at this latitude. Wind is usually light but the exposed sections on Gärdet and Norr Mälarstrand can carry a chill or a headwind depending on the day.

- If a runner breaks the course record, only the prize for the highest achieved result is paid. Prize levels are not accumulated or combined.
- The same applies to Swedish national course record bonuses — a runner receives only the CR bonus, not the CR bonus plus a finish-position prize.
- Elite runners must wear World Athletics-approved road racing shoes or risk retrospective removal from the results. Check the WA approved footwear list before race day.
- The race is conducted under the rules of the Swedish Athletics Federation and World Athletics. It also serves as the Swedish Marathon Championship (SM i maraton).
- Honorary prizes for the best male and female finishers are awarded at Stockholm Stadium immediately after the race.

Spectator Guide — How to Watch the adidas Stockholm Marathon
Stockholm is a superb city for watching a marathon. The course doubles back through many central districts, meaning a well-positioned supporter can cheer their runner three or four times without taking the metro. The city’s public transport is reliable and the stadium finish is free to enter. Here are the best spots and logistics.
| Location | Course km | What to see | Metro / Access |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lidingövägen (Start) | Km 0 | Tens of thousands of runners lining up — genuinely spectacular. Also Valhallavägen for watching elites turn onto the course. | Red Line 14 to Stadion or Tekniska Högskolan |
| Karlaplan | Km 8.6 and km 39.8 | Runners pass twice — ideal for a two-for-one cheer. Easy to reach and good space on the roundabout. | Red Line 13 to Karlaplan |
| Skeppsbron / Gamla Stan waterfront | Km 5.7, km 19.9 and km 36.7 | Royal Palace backdrop, runners pass three times. One of the most photogenic sections of the course. | Green Line 17/18/19 to Gamla Stan or walk from Slussen |
| Strandvägen / Nybroviken | Km 8 and km 19 | Elegant waterfront boulevard. Wide pavements and good sightlines. Runners pass on both outward and return legs. | Red Line 14 to Stadion, walk south |
| Södermalm / SoFo (Folkungagatan) | Km 23 | Most vibrant section of the course — 30 restaurants, great local crowd, good energy. Catch runners after the Katarinavägen climb. | Green Line to Medborgarplatsen |
| Norr Mälarstrand / City Hall | Km 30–31 | Waterfront promenade with City Hall in the background. Beautiful setting. Runners are in their “last 12km” push — they need the noise. | Red Line 14 to T-Centralen, walk west along waterfront |
| Stockholm Olympic Stadium (Finish) | Km 42.195 | Free entry from 12:15. Multiple entrances — Valhallavägen (Marathon Gate) and two on Lidingövägen. Café on site. Unforgettable atmosphere. | Red Line 14 to Stadion (avoid this station if possible — extremely crowded on race day) |
Spectator Logistics — Key Points
- Finish entry is free — Stockholm Stadium opens at 12:15. Bags up to cabin baggage size (56 x 45 x 25 cm). Larger bags go to the bag storage on Valhallavägen. No poles allowed inside.
- Avoid Stadion metro station on race morning (extremely crowded 1-2 hours before start) and post-race (4-5 hours after start). Use Karlaplan, Gärdet or Tekniska Högskolan instead.
- DJ cheer zones for the top 4 nations are scattered along the course. In 2026: Sweden, UK, Finland and Germany each had their own zone.
- Track your runner via the adidas Stockholm Marathon app — SEK 40 to follow up to 25 runners with live GPS and split notifications (iOS and Android).
- Watch on TV: TV4 and TV4 Play in Sweden, broadcast starting at 11:55. International viewers can check FloTrack or the official YouTube stream.
- Meeting after the race: Runners exit through the secured post-finish area at Östermalms IP (participants only). Meet family and friends at the labelled meeting points (A–F) along Lidingövägen outside the stadium.
- Make a sign at the Expo — materials are available at the adidas Expo, Östermalms IP, on Thursday and Friday.
Where to Stay for the adidas Stockholm Marathon
The race starts and finishes at Stockholm Olympic Stadium in Östermalm — one of Stockholm’s most central and well-connected districts. Most hotels within a 1.5km radius are walkable to the start line, and central Stockholm hotels are all within easy metro reach. Book as early as possible — marathon weekend is one of the busiest weekends in Stockholm’s hotel calendar and prices rise steeply as the date approaches.
| Area / Hotel | Category | Distance to Stadium | Notes |

Getting to Stockholm for Marathon Weekend
- Main airport: Stockholm Arlanda (ARN) — Direct flights from most European hubs, major US gateways (Newark, Chicago, New York via SAS, Norwegian, Finnair) and a growing number of Asian routes. 40km from the city centre.
- Arlanda Express train — ARN to Stockholm Central Station in approximately 20 minutes. Runs every 15 minutes. Tickets from SEK 175 one-way (book online for best rates). By far the fastest and most convenient option from the airport.
- Stockholm Bromma Airport (BMA) — Smaller city airport used for some European routes (Widerøe, SAS domestic). Only 8km from the city centre — useful if you can get a direct route.
- From the UK: Direct flights from London Heathrow, Gatwick and Manchester to Arlanda on SAS, British Airways and Norwegian. Flight time ~2.5 hours.
- From India: No direct routes to Stockholm from India. Common connections through London (Heathrow), Frankfurt, Amsterdam or Helsinki. SAS, Lufthansa, KLM and Finnair all offer onward connections.
- Currency: Swedish Krona (SEK). Sweden is largely cashless — cards are accepted almost everywhere including street food vendors. No need to carry significant cash.
- Public transport (SL): Stockholm’s metro (T-bana), buses and trams are excellent. Buy an SL Access card or pay by contactless card/phone directly on the metro. Journey planner at sl.se.
- Race weekend transport tip: Avoid driving to the event area on race day. Major roads including Lidingövägen are closed. Use metro or walk from nearby stations.
A Short History of the Stockholm Marathon
The Stockholm Marathon was born in 1979 — four years before the London Marathon, the same year as the Chicago Marathon. From the beginning, it was run through the heart of the city rather than on a closed circuit, and the idea of finishing inside Stockholm Olympic Stadium was baked in from day one. The 1912 stadium had already staged countless world records in track and field and the marathon organisers understood that closing the race inside its walls gave the event a gravity most city marathons could only aspire to. That finish line, and the stadium’s record of 83 world-record performances in athletics, remains the race’s most distinctive calling card nearly five decades later.
The women’s course record has stood since 1988, when Norwegian legend Grete Waitz clocked 2:28:24. Waitz won the New York City Marathon nine times and was among the first generation of women elite marathoners to race at the highest level. Her Stockholm record has survived faster courses, better shoes and decades of East African dominance — a testament to the course’s genuine challenge. The men’s record fell most recently in 2019 when Nigussie Sahlesilassie ran 2:10:10, still the mark everyone chases. The race serves as the Swedish Marathon Championship each year, adding a national title race within the international field. Authors Rich Hanna and Dennis Craythorn, who wrote the definitive reference guide to international marathons, once described Stockholm as “the best athletic event in the world” — high praise in a field that includes every major on the calendar.
The course has been adjusted over the years but its essential character — start on the wide boulevard outside Stadion, run through all seven districts of a city built on 14 islands, finish inside the 1912 arena — has never changed. The 2026 revision introduced the new SoFo section through Södermalm, extended the Norr Mälarstrand stretch on Kungsholmen and restructured the hardest climbs into the middle of the race rather than late on. This has been well received by runners who wanted a better pacing challenge. At nearly 50 years old, Stockholm remains one of the most thoughtfully organised and genuinely special marathons on the European calendar.
FatMarathoner Verdict: adidas Stockholm Marathon 2027
Stockholm is not a marathon you run for a PB. It is a marathon you run because you want the experience of racing through one of the world’s most beautiful cities and finishing inside a stadium with 83 world records on its walls. If those are your reasons, it delivers completely.
The course is honest: real climbs, cobbled sections, a noon start in what can be warm spring conditions and a Narvavägen repeat at km 40 that will test everything you have left. But it is also endlessly varied, magnificently supported and logistically very well managed. The Expo, the Shake Out Run, the pasta party, the post-finish food and massage — the organisers actually care about the runner experience and it shows in every detail.
For international runners, Stockholm is an easy sell: an excellent city for a long weekend, superb food and design culture, near-perfect late May weather in most years, genuinely iconic sightseeing along the course itself and a finish that will stay in your memory longer than any flat urban road race. Book your hotel early, register the moment Period 2 opens on August 24 and treat yourself to the adidas Shake Out Run the evening before. You will not regret any of it.
FatMarathoner rating: 4.7/5 — A must-run European classic for anyone who wants more than just a time.

Registration for the adidas Stockholm Marathon 2027 reopens on August 24, 2026 at 09:00 CET. Only 4,000 spots are available for 2027 and places will be allocated on a strict first-come, first-served basis. You can sign up for a pre-opening reminder on the official race website. What is the course record for the adidas Stockholm Marathon?
The men’s course record is 2:10:10, set by Nigussie Sahlesilassie (Ethiopia) in 2019. The women’s course record is 2:28:24, set by Grete Waitz (Norway) in 1988. Waitz’s record has stood for over 36 years and remains one of the most enduring course records in European marathon history.
Is the adidas Stockholm Marathon a good race for first-time international marathoners?
Yes, with some caveats. Stockholm is very well organised, the course is clearly marked, there are 12 pace groups from 3:00 to 5:45, and the 13 hydration stations and 10 energy stations are generously spaced. The city is extremely accessible and English is widely spoken. However, the course has real hills (Katarinavägen at km 22 and Lundagatan at km 27 are genuine climbs) and the noon start in potentially warm late-May conditions requires good preparation. If this is your first international race and you have trained on hills, Stockholm is an excellent choice. If you have only trained on flat courses, manage expectations on time.
How do I get from Stockholm Arlanda Airport to the race start area?
The fastest way is the Arlanda Express train, which runs directly from the airport to Stockholm Central Station in approximately 20 minutes and departs every 15 minutes. From Stockholm Central, take metro Red Line 14 (direction Mörby Centrum) to Stadion, Karlaplan or Tekniska Högskolan — all are within easy walking distance of the race area. Avoid driving to the stadium on race day as major roads, including Lidingövägen, are closed for the race.
What is the adidas Shake Out Run and do I need to do it?
The adidas Shake Out Run is a 5km run held the evening before the marathon, starting and finishing at Stockholm Olympic Stadium. It costs SEK 200 for marathon entrants (SEK 345 for non-marathon runners) and is a brilliant way to loosen your legs, absorb the race atmosphere and get a feel for the area around the stadium. The first 1,000 registrants receive a complimentary adidas t-shirt. It is not mandatory but it is genuinely enjoyable and recommended for anyone staying in Stockholm for the full race weekend.
Do I need a visa to run the adidas Stockholm Marathon?
Sweden is part of the Schengen Area. Most EU, EEA, UK, US, Canadian and Australian passport holders can enter without a visa for stays up to 90 days. Indian nationals and citizens of many other countries require a Schengen visa, which should be applied for at least 2-3 months before the race. Include your race registration confirmation as supporting documentation with your visa application. Check the Swedish Migration Agency website for country-specific requirements.
