Forty-three seconds. That is all that separated the top three men at the 2026 EVA Air Marathon in Taipei this morning, in what turned out to be one of the tightest elite finishes the race has seen. Yoshiki Nagano crossed the line in 2:24:25, with Jamie Lacey and George Mbugua Ngure finishing second and third within a breath of each other. On the women’s side, Artjoy Torregosa ran a controlled race to win in 2:51:30, well clear of the field.

The race went ahead on schedule despite Typhoon Saomai moving through the region. The storm’s marine warning was lifted on the evening of October 24 but Northern Taiwan was still dealing with residual rainfall and unsettled conditions through the night. That context matters when reading the winning times: the 2025 men’s winner clocked 2:18:10 on what was likely a cleaner morning. A six-minute gap at the front is worth noting.

3rdGeorge Mbugua Ngure2:25:08

Nagano’s winning margin over Lacey was 27 seconds, with Ngure coming in just 16 seconds further back. Whether that reflects a tactical race that never truly broke open or a tough morning for the front pack, it made for a compelling finish. Officially, the top three are separated by less than a minute across 42 kilometres.

Torregosa won with a four-minute cushion over Cherono, suggesting she ran her own race from the front rather than responding to a pack. Jerop rounded out the podium just inside the 2:58 mark.

Half Marathon and 10K Top Finishers

The half marathon men’s race had a story of its own. Amos Cheruiyot Kirui took the win in 1:06:56 but Zhou Ting-yin, the race’s own ambassador and a prominent name in Taiwanese distance running, finished second in 1:07:22 — 26 seconds back. That is a creditable result on any day, let alone one with overnight weather disruptions. Shi Yu-zuo finished third in 1:08:32.

In the women’s half, Michelle Zamora won in 1:21:49, with Xie Qian-he second in 1:22:00 and Bai Zhi-rui third in 1:26:19.

About the EVA Air Marathon

The EVA Air Marathon has been running since 2018, when it launched as a half marathon. The full marathon category was added in 2022 and the event has grown steadily since, now attracting 24,000 runners across its four distances. It is one of a small number of races in Taiwan certified by the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS), and Nike Run Club has been the official training partner since the inaugural edition.

The course starts at the Presidential Office Square before tracking largely alongside the Keelung River and through Taipei’s riverside parks. Runners finish near Songshan Airport, almost literally under the wing of an EVA Air aircraft. One modest climb on Nanhu Bridge is the only real elevation challenge on an otherwise flat urban route.

Conditions Note

Typhoon Saomai’s marine warning was lifted on the evening of October 24 but Northern Taiwan saw residual rainfall overnight and into race morning. Read today’s winning times with that in mind. The 2025 men’s champion, Joseph Mwangi Ngare, ran 2:18:10 under better conditions. Slower times today are not a reflection of the field’s quality.
