It’s that time of the year when one can feel festivity in the air and you get to know that the best time of the year has officially arrived. But following the night of Diwali celebrations, Delhi-NCR and even parts of neighboring states of Punjab and Haryana are under the blanket of thick smog.
This smog is toxic and it is extremely important to take measures to protect yourself from the rising air toxicity. Following a few effective tips can help in reducing respiratory and cardiac problems during this time. Let us discuss how to Survive Delhi’s Toxic Smog:
Keep Potted Plants inside Home
One of the best ways to improve the quality of air at home naturally is by keeping potted indoor plants. Plants like Aloe Vera, Ivy, Bamboo Pam etc. help in the elimination of harmful compounds like benzene, formaldehyde and carbon monoxide thereby bringing down the air pollution levels inside homes.
Go for Herbal Tea
If you need to travel outdoors, you might feel irritation in your throat. You can have herbal Ginger and Tulsi tea as it will help in soothing the throat and at the same time increase the body’s immunity.
Eat the Right Foods
Smog gives rise to numerous infections and allergies, and it is important to maintain a good immunity level. Boost your body’s immunity by giving it the right kind of food. Prep up your body to fight against the diseases by including fruits and vegetables in your diet that contain Vitamin C, Omega fatty acids and Magnesium.
Drink Lots of Water
Make sure you keep yourself well-hydrated throughout the smoggy season. Having water flushes out all the toxins from the lungs, throat and nose. Make sure you drink as much water as possible.
Give up Smoking
According to reports, inhaling Delhi air post-Diwali is as bad as smoking 50 cigarettes a day. If you are a smoker, give up on smoking as it will only stress the respiratory system and increase the chances of respiratory ailments.
Take steam
Another way of relaxing your air passages is by taking steam daily in the evening. While doing so, try to add a few drops of eucalyptus oil in the steam water.
Buy Anti-Pollution masks
Large quantities of Respirable Suspended Particulate Matter (RSPM) are present in the air during smog. These particles can easily enter our respiratory system when we breathe and can damage our lungs in the longer run. To avoid this situation, it is extremely important to wear anti-pollution masks every time you step out of your home. You can opt for N95 air mask or N99 VOG mask.
Restrict your Outdoor Activities
The Government shuts down schools to save children from the harmful effects of pollutants and toxins, but adults too should try to stay indoors as much as possible. If your office provides the work from the option, make sure to go for it. Also, skip your morning and evening walk or any other outdoor activity to protect your lungs from the pollutant air.
Additional Tip: Eating Jaggery also known as Gudd is a great way to flush out the pollutants from the lungs. Jaggery can be eaten raw or can be replaced with sugar in milk or other daily preparations.
Follow the above-mentioned tips to safeguard yourself from the increasing air pollution and also, try and exercise at home to keep your body fit.
